In late 1980s a Swedish commercial company, called Tempur-Pedic developed their own version of memory foam for medical use. In this period memory foam was widely use in patients who suffered from back pain and patients who had sleep problem. Latex has been known for decades to be one of the most luxurious and supportive sleep surfaces available. And, with our ErgoSoft 100% Natural "Green" Latex combined with 100% Organic Wool, you're headed for a supreme sleep experience! Whether you're sensitive to the ecological impact of modern lifestyle or to chemicals and synthetics; or if you're just looking for the best mattresses at the best prices, you can find just what you are looking for.

If you've never had the experience of sleeping on a latex mattress or topper, you'll be pleasantly surprised by its soft yet springy surface. In fact, sometimes latex that feels a bit soft turns out to provide a resiliently supportive sleep surface. So, give yourself the best ... and give yourself time to appreciate its wonderful feel and support. The naturally anti-microbial and pest-resistant qualities of natural latex are also a sure winner for a healthy home.

You can also find blended latex mattresses, which combine some of the qualities of domestic foams with natural latex. Although this product is not 100% natural, the process creates a type of foam that can be adjusted much more easily for graduations in softness and support.

It is important to have a bed that is firm enough - but not too firm - to sleep on. Our bodies are not flat surfaces, and they require a conforming sleep surface that molds to your body shape, cradling your body in comfort. Sleeping on a bed that is too hard or too soft can cause "pressure points" to build up during the night. These pressure points can cause constant turning all through the night and even leave you feeling stiff or in pain when you awaken.

Years ago, the latex foam mattress was very expensive and weighed a ton. With advancements in foaming technology and combinations with other exceptional sleep materials, that has changed. Latex mattresses are now available at much lower prices, while the designs are even better than ever. People all around the world are becoming familiar with the wonderful comfort and healing effects of these natural sleep systems.

The extra support of a latex mattress set can aid in dispersing pressure away from the vertebrae, improving spinal alignment. It also serves as an orthopedic bed, relieving pressure point pains caused by conditions such as arthritis. Since switching to a latex foam mattress, many people report a more satisfying sleep, lessening of aches and pains, and an overall improvement in quality of life. The purpose of sleep is deep rest and rejuvenation. A solid night's rest also helps to reduce stress levels and increase energy for a more pleasant and productive day. It has been found that people who sleep well are also less likely to suffer from heart disease, strokes, and diabetes.

Memory Foam and Latex Bedding - Are All Bedding Foams Created Equal?

We’ve all seen the ads, and the hype, about memory foam and other types of foam bedding products. But, how much of this is simply Brand Name positioning and attempts to capture the bedding market? And, when you throw in proprietary and patented formulations, well, that is what makes brand names and creates a lot of options.

Most synthetic bedding foams are basically polyurethane-based foams of either an open or closed cell structure, produced from and with the aid of, other chemicals. Proprietary brand name foams favorably adjust the qualities of the foam by adding specific agents, and both the formulation and the specifically created features become identified with the brand name. Of course, the owners of these patents jealously protect both their name and what it represents in terms of products and quality.

Although durable closed-cell polyurethane foam was apparently a German creation during wartime, open-cell or ‘memory’ foam was originally developed by NASA scientists in the United States. That original formulation was further improved upon, initially, by a Swedish company now known as Tempur-Pedic, which also patented their formulation. First used commercially as a medical aid for certain difficult cases, this company later spearheaded the retail sale of memory foam bedding to households around the world.

Nowadays, high quality memory foam is also manufactured by numerous reputable companies in the United States and around the world. And, with its broad appeal in the marketplace, it’s no wonder the Chinese have been working to take on the market by improving their products and offering them at prices American companies can’t match.

Taken as a class, all memory foams have certain common and very desirable features. Specifically, the ability to recover gradually from body impressions, and more ‘cradling’ and ‘cushioning’ of body contours. And, if you ever doubted that little bit of ‘sinking into the foam’, be aware that the additional contact of the foam with more square inches of body surface results in greater distribution of body weight, and reduction of troublesome ‘pressure points’.

In terms of the ‘feel’ of one specific brand of foam, combined with its perceived support and hardness, this is the domain of specific brands and models of foam. US foam manufacturers such as Foamex and Carpenter actually manufacture a variety of foam types (models) in a range of densities, while for many years the Swedish brand held fast to their flagship formulation.

And, what about all the claims and testimonials to the benefits of sleeping on memory foam? While memory foam is a great thing and does help many people find better and more comfortable sleep, it is very important to understand that you really shouldn’t be expecting these products to solve all of your health and sleep issues. There are times when you should see a doctor, a chiropractor, or seek to address the actual cause of your particular issue from another angle. And, perhaps to do both at the same time!

If you happen to be one of those chemically sensitive individuals or an environmentalist, you might be more interested in natural (non-synthetic) foams such as Green Latex and Reflex Natural. Among other things, Natural or Green Latex is naturally hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, and dust and mite resistant. On the other hand, the term ‘Talalay Latex’, while it actually refers to the process for creating spongy latex foam, is frequently also used to refer to a hybrid blend of both natural and synthetic foams. We’ll talk more in another article.

Swedish Tempurpedic Mattress

Are you waking up every morning with your neck feeling stiff or sore? Are you someone whose partner is always complaining because you snore too much? Or are you someone who will wake up every morning feeling tired as if you do not have enough sleep? If any of these questions describe how you are each morning then it might be time to consider by yourself a new mattress for your bed. Certainly a bad mattress can cause you a wealth of sleep problems, but help is at hand in the form of a Swedish tempurpedic mattress.

Tempurpedic mattresses are manufactured by a Swedish company called Tempur-pedic. The main advantage to be gained from using such a mattress compared to the more traditional ones is that it conforms to your body shape and so prevents pressure from building up at certain points on the body.

As well as conforming to your body and reliving pressure points on your body, the Swedish tempurpedic mattress also provides you with support like no other mattress can. Plus as you rise up from the mattress each morning it returns back to its normal shape which it retains extremely well, but as soon as you lay down on it again it will conform to your body shape as required. The reason why this occurs is because of the material (viscoelastic) which it is made from. It is the way in which the foam is manufactured which provides it with these special properties. Any new Tempurpedic mattress that a person purchases come with a 10 year warranty.

Plus all Swedish tempurpedic mattresses are sensitive to temperature and so will conform to a person's body temperature as they lay on it. In fact many people have described a warm cuddly feeling that this type of mattress provides for them which helps further to ensure that they get a good nights sleep. However if you find that your Tempurpedic mattress gets too warm then you can always put a topper on it which will thus make it much more comfortable to lay on.

Swedish tempurpedic mattress costs quite a bit more than traditional mattresses but it does have several advantages over these. It is important to remember that on average a person will spend about 30% of their lives sleeping and so it definitely worth investing a little bit more in your mattress if it going to assure you of a good night's sleep each night.

Natural Latex vs Synthetic Latex

Natural Latex can be found in almost all plants and trees throughout the world. Mattresses and mattress toppers made of pure latex can be manufactured in two ways: Natural Rubber Latex, which is 100% pure "green" latex, and as a mix that also contains Styrene Butadiene Rubber which is a synthetic latex. There are not very many manufacturers of natural latex around the world but those that do manufacture latex use a process called the talalay process.

Now, the big decision for most people at this point is whether to go with 100% natural latex or to use the synthetic blend latex. I'll begin with the advantages and disadvantages of natural latex. First, natural latex is, well, just what it sounds like: 100% natural with only a few other natural curers and catalysts that are washed, aired or heated out of the final product. This leaves a chemical free, allergen free and almost odor free piece of foam that is both resilient to repeated usage and is naturally flame resistant. However, as with most things in nature, there is some inconsistency with natural latex.

The talalay process works well to distribute the cell structure evenly through the foam, but it can only do so much. There are still some inconsistencies with natural latex including different batches of foam resulting in different supportive properties, discolorations between different batches of foam and the simple fact that almost ALL foams do wear out at some point after years of use.

To make the next section a little easier to discuss, I will call the blend of natural latex and synthetic latex, Syntex. Syntex is another form of foam used in mattresses and toppers and is passed off simply as "latex foam". Syntex has the same properties of natural latex when it comes to support, firmness and quality, but it does excel in one two areas: consistency and life. The chemicals added during the manufacturing process allow for better dispersion, and thusly, better consistency throughout each individual piece of foam. This gives control over the feel and the density of the foam. These chemicals also cause a strong cell structure within the foam giving it increased durability and longer life without sacrificing comfort. On the downside these chemicals do irritate those sensitive to allergies and can leave a particular odor. Thankfully, the smell does fade over time.

Prices vary depending on whether one looks to a brand name latex mattress or whether they look at quality alternatives that have sprung up within the market the past few years. Happy hunting!

Tempurpedic Mattress Topper - The Best Visco Foam Mattress Topper?

Just about everybody's heard about memory foam mattresses but, unfortunately, not everyone can afford one. That's why buying a visco elastic foam topper (the correct term for memory foam) can be a great option. Tempurpedic was the original memory foam mattress but now it has many competitors - and usually at lower prices. So, should you spend the extra and buy a Tempurpedic mattress topper? The answer is, yes.

Any quality memory foam mattress is essentially composed of an inner core of high-density polymer foam (traditional foam) with upper layers of memory foam. Depending on which memory foam mattress you buy, the upper layers can consist on one, two or more layers of visco-foam of varying densities.

The density of memory foam is important, for two reasons. First, the lower the density, the softer the foam feels but the less it supports the sleeper. Secondly, the lower the density, the cheaper it is to make as the mattress contains more air and less foam than those made with a higher density.

Most orthopedic practitioners agree that the most optimal density is between 5 and 5.3lbs - cheap versions are often of a density of only around 4lbs. Tempurpedic mattresses are made with memory foam of this density - as do other reputable brands like Restonic, Sealy and Serta. However, not all memory foam is the same. The memory foam made by Tempurpedic is proprietary whereas as most other brands are patented - when the patent expires then everyone else can copy the formula; this will never happen with Tempurpedic.

Also, the tiny air bubbles found in the Tempurpedic mattress are of uniform size. When pressure and heat is applied the air passes from one cell to the next - this is what makes visco foam unique (traditional foams merely compress the cells when pressure is applied). This special property means that the mattress will conform to the exact shape of the sleeper, therefore providing the best support possible.

The Tempurpedic mattress topper is made from exactly the same memory foam as the company's mattresses.

Taking care of the topper is easy too. Like its mattresses, the cover can be removed and cleaned. The company recommends a cold temperature setting for machine washing and a cool setting for machine drying. Air-drying is best. You should never use chlorine products and NEVER wash the Tempur material itself.

Before you buy a topper you should also ensure that your existing mattress is suitable. It should be firm to hard and not have deep depressions or sagging. Fitting any memory foam topper to such a mattress is pointless; consider replacing it altogether.

Finally, I would like to make one more point about why the Tempurpedic mattress topper is the best. Just about all other brands currently on the market compare their product to that of Tempurpedic. They do this because they know that Tempur sets the standard. You'll never find any other brand comparing its product with any other brand except Tempurpedic. If that isn't the best recommendation for Tempurpedic I don't know what else is.

Memory Foam Mattress - Will a Convoluted Airflow Layer Keep Your Bed Cool?

Memory foam mattresses are a relatively new development in the luxury bedding market, only having been out for a little over 10 years now. Most people grew up sleeping on an innerspring mattress and are familiar with their construction and feel. But the make up of memory foam beds is a new consideration and it makes comparison shopping difficult for first time consumers.

Different mattress makers are building their beds with different configurations of foam, and everyone says their way is the best. There are many innovative construction techniques that contribute to some really nice foam beds. However there are other constructions that don't have value, but get perpetuated in the marketplace because everyone is following the sales leaders.

One construction technique that has no value, but a lot of mattress makers are using it, is the convoluted airflow layer. A convoluted airflow layer is simply a layer of polyurethane base foam (not memory foam) that has been run through a convoluting machine to give it a ripple or wave pattern. This base foam layer is placed below the memory foam layer for the purpose of creating airflow channels to vent heat away from the body.

The convoluted airflow layer is the supposed to be the answer to memory foam overheating. In fact one of the biggest complaints about memory foam beds is that they get too hot for some people. So, manufacturers experimented with convoluted foam to see if it would help keep the mattress cool. The idea is that it will allow air to circulate along through the open spaces, replacing warm air near your body with cooler air from outside the mattress. They found that the convoluted layer didn't help keep the bed cool at all, but customers liked the idea of it, and this helped sell more beds.

Reasons to Be Skeptical of Convoluted Airflow Layers

First, memory foam beds are at least 2 layers of foam laminated (glued) together. If the bed has a convoluted layer, then this adds a third layer. Other layers can include super soft pillow top layers on top of the bed and base layers of different firmness. When a memory foam layer is glued on top of a convoluted layer, the convoluted bumps flatten out and stick to the bottom of the memory foam layer. The edges of the convoluted layer are not glued, so from the outside of the mattress, it still looks like it might work. But if you were to look at a cross section cutaway from the bed, you would see that no air could possibly squeeze through.

Second, even if the airflow layer was not glued (as in a component bed), the convolutions or channels would not circulate a significant amount of air (if any at all). The sides of the bed, where the outside air would be pulled into the mattress are covered first by the mattress cover, then by the sheets, then by the blankets, comforter, etc. Certainly it's not an ideal ventilation system.

Third, there are no studies to back up the assertion that airflow layers work. One could be done simply. In fact, there is an airflow study that is commonly done to check the airflow of open cell foam.

How Memory Foam Mattresses Can Prevent Sleep Deprivation

Most people have slept at least part of their life on a traditional innerspring mattress and are familiar with the bouncy feel these beds have. Springs help a bed contour to your body and "spring" back to create that bouncy feel when you sit or lie down. Because of the way springs are constructed, movement can be felt across the whole surface of the bed, allowing people to feel every move their partner makes. As a result, motion transfer is a common cause of sleep disturbance with innerspring beds. When one partner moves around or gets in and out of bed at night, they often wake the other partner from sleep.

Because sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems, and in fact is an epidemic problem in the modern world, alleviating sleep disturbance caused by a restless bedmate can significantly improve your quality of life. Some pocket coil spring mattresses have less motion transfer compared to traditional spring beds. But the real winner for controlling motion transfer and the resulting sleep disturbance between partners is the memory foam mattress.

Memory foam was originally created by NASA to reduce pressure on astronauts during lift off. But another purpose the original engineers had in mind for memory foam was to reduce vibration (motions transfer). Likewise, memory foam was originally incorporated into mattresses to reduce pressure on body joints, but also has the secondary benefit of preventing motion transfer between sleeping partners.

Memory foam inhibits motion transfer because it recovers slowly from impressions. When you press your hand into memory foam and then take it away, memory foam does not bounce right back. Instead it slowly recovers its shape. The same thing applies when you lie down on a memory foam bed. You push against the bed, but it does not push back against you with equal force or speed.

An innerspring bed reacts to pressure much the same way a trampoline does. When you jump down on a trampoline it will force you back with equal speed and pressure - making you fly into the air. If you were to jump on an innerspring mattress, you get the same effect, which is why children love to jump on them. But a memory foam mattress's reaction is as slow as a turtle. It will push back when you push on it, but only slowly.

Because most innerspring beds have connecting coils, a bump on one side of the bed will cause motion across the surface of the entire bed. But an all foam bed limits motion to the immediate area that you are pushing against. For example, just sitting on the edge of a spring mattress can be felt by someone lying on the other side of the bed. But on a memory foam bed, you can not feel a person sitting on the other side of the bed because the motion is limited; it simply does not reach you.

A popular commercial today features a memory foam mattress with a glass of red wine in one corner of the bed and a woman jumping on an opposite corner of the bed. Try as she may, her jumping just won't spill the glass of wine. Then the woman tries the same thing on an innerspring bed and the wine spills all over. The demonstration shows a stark contrast in motion transfer between innerspring and memory foam mattresses.

Memory foam mattresses have reduced the motion transfer between partners to almost zero, allowing people to get in and out of bed without waking each other up. For couples experiencing sleep deprivation due to motion transfer, a memory foam mattress can make a dramatic improvement in their quality of sleep. Besides all the other health benefits to be gained from reducing pressure points, memory foam beds have become the best solution for people looking for long periods of stillness that promote deeply restful sleep.

Grading Your Latex or Memory Foam Mattress

When shopping for a new memory foam mattress, the bottom line is how the bed makes you feel. If you lay down on the bed and it feels like heaven, then you don’t need any expert to tell you about the superior technical properties of the foam or the exquisite detailing that makes this bed the highest quality on the market. When a bed feels good, you are comfortable, and when you are comfortable, you sleep; period.

But for some reason people are just interested in the make up of a mattress. Perhaps it makes us feel dutiful and responsible to do a little research before we lay out a chunk of cash for an important health or home purchase. Or maybe it’s because we never really get to see what’s inside a mattress and we’re curious. Whatever your reason, the following will tell you all the important technical properties of foam so you can compare different foam beds and make an informed buying decision. These properties are the same for latex and memory foam (that includes Tempur-Pedic / Tempurpedic which is also a memory foam though they have branded it “tempur material”).

Technical Properties of Latex & Memory Foam Mattresses

A foam mattress is made from at least a couple of different types of foam, sometimes more. Retailers will sometimes give the properties of the top layers of a latex or memory foam mattress in their literature. The following foam properties apply to: polyeurothane foam, latex foam, or memory foam.

Density - The measurement of the mass per unit volume, measured and expressed in pounds per cubic foot (pcf) or kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3). For example, 1 foot square block of 5lb (pound) density foam will weigh 5lbs.

Indentation Force Deflection (IFD) - also known as Initial Load Deflection (ILD) - The measure of the load bearing capacity of flexible polyurethane foam. IFD is most often measured as the force (in pounds) required to compress a 50 square inch circular indenter foot into a four inch thick sample, typically 15 inches square or larger, to a stated percentage of the sample's initial height. The most common ILD values are generated at 25 and 65 percent of initial height. The top layer of a memory foam bed is usually between 12 - 15 ILD. High resiliency base foam used in bedding is usually 20 – 40 IFD.

Support Factor - Support Factor = 65% IFD or 25% IFD determined after one minute of rest or recovery. Support factor can be used in conjunction with a known 25% IFD value to determine the 65% IFD value. Foams with low support factor are more likely to bottom out (compress fully) under load.

Flex Fatigue (Dynamic Fatigue) - The normal softening or loss of firmness over time and with use. Fatigue can be measured in the laboratory by repeatedly compressing a foam sample and measuring the change in IFD.

Tear Strength - The measure of the force required to continue a tear in foam after a split or break has been started and expressed in pounds per inch (lb./in.). An important property in determining suitability of foam in applications where the material is sewed, stapled, or otherwise anchored to a solid substance.

Resilience - An indicator of the surface elasticity or "springiness" of flexible foam; measured by dropping a steel ball onto the foam cushion and measuring how high the ball rebounds. Memory foam has almost no resilience. High resilience foams are used in the base layer of mattresses.

Hysteresis - Measurement of the ability to maintain original support characteristics after flexing. Generally, the firmness (IFD) is tested at 25% indentation, 65% indentation and again at 25% on the way up. Hysteresis is the percent of 25% IFD loss measured as a compression tester returns to the normal (25% IFD) position after measuring 65% compression. Lower hysteresis values (less IFD loss) are desirable. Low hysteresis in conventional foam is equal to less IFD loss in durability and fatigue tests.

Air Flow - The amount of air expressed in cubic feet per minute, that can be drawn through a 2" x 2" x 1" foam sample at .5-inch water pressure differential. Higher air flow indicates a more open foam cell structure.

How to Decorate a Designer Kid's Room

One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to spice up any bland and boring kid's bedroom is by using the art (literally) of murals. Two others are fabrics and mirrors. This article will show you how to use all three to create a room that will wow any little girl's senses.

Surely your little girl already has pictures up in her room - pictures of friends and loved ones and fond memories, pictures clipped from magazines and color-printed off the web, and pictures she drew and colored herself. This is where you'll find your inspiration for the bedroom wall murals that will most excite and enchant her.

There is scant a single little girl who isn't captivated by beauty, who doesn't love to surround herself with beautiful things. So treat her to the bedroom renovation that she'll cherish her whole life long making her room as pretty as she pictures she finds most beautiful.

One of the greatest advantages to you of murals (as suggested above) is cost, as paint is one of the cheapest interior design materials you'll ever buy.

And if your little girl is lucky enough to have her own custom theme bed, you can complement the colors, theme, and design of the bed with those you select for the rest of the room. Alternatively, you could opt for a total rehaul of the room décor and paint the custom theme bed anew too. A blue, gold, and white princess castle bed, for example, can be transformed by being repainted pink with lavender borders. You can even paint a full 3D mural on the custom theme bed itself since, after all, a custom theme bed is a three-dimensional picture-scape just waiting to happen.

Fabrics are another way to make a little girl's custom bedroom that's as pretty as a picture and as vibrant as she is. From lace borders to canopy beds to custom bedding to window dressings to children's furniture reupholstering, fabrics can transform an entire girl's bedroom in one fell swoop.

When it comes to those images your little girl finds prettiest, there's little doubt that her own adorable face is one of them (and if not, it should be). Help her to highlight that picture she finds prettiest - that of her own image - with the use of mirrors. A full-length mirror on her closet door is almost a necessity. As is a dressing table with an ample mirror before which she can sit and experiment with hair styles, fashion and jewelry combinations, and (eventually) make-up.

You don't have to be a fabulous artist to create a custom theme bed that is as pretty as a picture. Just ask your little girl - she'll tell you. Better yet, give her the paintbrush and she'll show you.

Sleep Problems and Cures

What is a normal sleep pattern?

Sleep cycle include - light sleep, deep sleep, REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which happens several times in the night. Eye moves, muscles twitch, and heartbeat and blood pressure fluctuate. Most dreaming happens during REM sleep.

All of these stages are necessary, and if any one is disrupted, sleep problems can occur. Some examples are:

Sleep apnea - apnea means "not breathing" in Greek. There are about 2 million Americans with this condition. While sleeping, they actually stop breathing because the muscles in the upper airway droop and close it down; then, as carbon dioxide increases in the lungs, the brain alarms the person enough to force a big breathy snore. This can happen several hundred times a night, making sleep restless. One cure is a machine that forces air into the nose. Weight loss may help overweight men who are prone to this disorder.

Narcolepsy - falling asleep without warning. About 300,000 Americans suffer from this condition. The pace of narcoleptics' sleep is speedier. They fall asleep fast, in two minutes, and enter REM sleep within 15 minutes. The solution: strong stimulants.

Working at Night - particularly the graveyard shift, causing disturbances in biological rhythms. It is possible to turn the clock around with light therapy. That is, exposure to intervals of daylight-bright light and daytime darkness can fool your body into turning night into day, as can capsules of melatonin, a brain chemical from the pineal gland.

Parasomnia - including night terrors, sleeping walking, and sleep paralysis. Children who experience these disorders usually outgrow them, but adults may need professional help. Sometimes hypnotherapy helps.

A Stop Snoring Mouthpiece Can Cure Snoring

Snoring mouth pieces may provide relief for snorers including those suffering from mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Specifically designed mouth pieces known as mandibular advancement splints are worn in the mouth while sleep and help prevent the back of the tongue from blocking one's airway and causing snoring.

Snoring may be caused directly by obesity, neurological based sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, nasal congestion or another medical issue. Snoring and sleep disturbance snoring is more likely to disturb the snorer's partner than the snorer. Chronic snoring may be related to allergies, illness, formation of the mouth and obstructive sleep apnea. In many cases, a snoring mouthpiece is designed to help reduce the volume and level of snoring if not eradicating it altogether. Mouthpieces are typically recommended by a physician, dentist or a sleep specialist.

Dental Support

A stop snoring mouthpiece may be purchased online or through a dentist or medical doctor. The specialized mouth piece will be made based on a mold taken directly from the patient's mouth. These mouthpieces are significantly more expensive, up to $3000. However, they are guaranteed to fit a patient's mouth perfectly. Prior to investing in a drugstore, online store or dental purchase, persons, who snore loudly or chronically enough to disturb their partner's sleep or their own, should consult with a physician. Snoring may be indicative of a more serious medical problem such as obstructive sleep apnea.

A anti-snoring mouth piece can improve sleep quality for the person using it. If the lower jaw is positioned slightly forward, the user's tongue will be repositioned to no longer block his or her airway.

That is one reason why if you snore your doctor would recommend you sleep on your stomach or side. Gravity will have a greater effect of causing the back of your tongue and other soft tissue to block your airway if you sleep on your back.

Diagnosing Sleep Apnea

Diagnosing sleep apnea requires a sleep study performed at a licensed facility. It is important to remember that not all snorers suffer from sleep apnea. A patient will be admitted for an overnight stay. Trained sleep specialists will attach leads to the temple, chest, legs and feet. A heart rate and oxygen monitor will be attached to the finger. The patient will then sleep in a comfortably darkened room, cooled to the temperature requested and a humidifier will be used to keep the air moistened. While the patient sleeps, the specialist will observe via camera and monitors for episodes of gasping, choking and sleep wave patterns. The leg leads will indicate the amount of leg movement. Blood oxygen levels will be monitored in order to determine if O2 saturation is dropping due to the episodes. At the end of the night, the sleep specialists will be able to offer the diagnosis of sleep apnea and typically the type. Further testing and recommendations will provide the patient with a course of treatment. There have been positive results of people who suffer from obstructive sleep apea using a anti-snoring mouthpiece to reduce or eliminate their symptoms because the true cause of their obstruction, which is blockage of their airway by their tongue and other soft tissue is treated with such a device.

Tips on Choosing the Right CPAP Nasal Pillows

Frequently, the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines and masks are covered by insurance. CPAP nasal pillows, in Toronto as in other parts of the country, are often included in the insurance coverage but you have to inquire from your carrier lest you pay for your CPAP supplies more than expected.

Once you have settled the insurance aspect, the next logical step is to choose the right CPAP nasal pillows in Toronto, where there are many manufacturers of CPAP machines, for you.

Determine Sleeping Habits

As much as not all CPAP sufferers have the same sleeping habits down to the last snore, in the same way not all CPAP nasal pillows in Toronto, or anywhere else for that matter, are created equal. That being said, you have to determine your sleeping habits to get the right CPAP pillows for you.

If you are a stomach and side sleeper who toss and turn around in sleep, then larger CPAP pillows are best for you. You will have ease of changing positions without coming up short with larger pillows, not to mention that fact that larger pillows often provide a more flexible support.

If you are a side sleeper who can maintain the position for hours at a time, then a smaller pillow with the same design will do. You can even bring it on your overnight travels! (Never do without the right CPAP nasal pillows in Toronto and everywhere else because your headgear needs all the support it can get so as not to fall off your head. The steady air pressure brought by the CPAP machine is necessary for a good night's sleep)

Determine Type of Mask Used

Your mask must be able to blend in with the CPAP pillow. With trial and error, you should be able to find the right CPAP nasal pillow that can accommodate the type of CPAP mask you wear especially when you consider that space factors figure prominently in the equation.

You can also ask your doctor for a prescription of a different type of CPAP mask. For example, one with a longer tube can provide for more freedom even when the nasal pillow is on the shorter side.

You can also look for CPAP nasal pillows that provide titrations for the mask itself and for your ears, neck, head and shoulders. This way, you are assured of fewer pressure points and greater comfort while you sleep.

As previously stated, trial and error is often the best way to find the right CPAP nasal pillows in Toronto and everywhere else.

In conclusion, always keep in mind that the use of CPAP as a remedy and relief from sleep apnea symptoms largely relies on your proper use and wear of the device. This means that it should stay in place the whole time you wear it. The right CPAP nasal pillows provide hollowed spaces that should support and protect your device while giving you a good night's sleep with their firm support on your head.

Which Mattresses Do Dust Mites Love and Which Do They Hate?

Some mattresses can be a haven for dust mites.

This is a problem because the droppings and shed skin of dust mites can cause serious allergies in people, including asthma.

What are dust mites?

Dust mites are microscopic bugs that largely live on dead skin cells that are shed from people and pets. Dust mites love mattresses because they are where the mites can find a large supply of dead skin cells.

Certain types of mattresses are more susceptible to dust mites than others. Let's look at different mattress types and see how vulnerable each is.

Innerspring mattresses

Innerspring mattresses have the most problem with dust mites. A typical innerspring mattress often has a dust mite population into the tens of thousands. Innerspring beds have this problem because dead skin cells can easily penetrate the mattress and so can the dust mites that eat them. In addition, they ike to eat much of the material that is used to construct an innerspring bed.

Memory foam mattresses

Memory foam beds, such as the Tempur-pedic bed, are a little more resistant to dust mites than innerspring mattresses because they generally don't like to eat memory foam. However, just as with innerspring mattresses, your dead skin cells can penetrate the memory foam and so can the dust mites.

Airbeds

Airbeds, such as the Sleep Number bed, are more dust mite resistant than memory foam mattresses. This is because dead skin cells and dust mites can't penetrate the air chambers. However, they can penetrate any foam padding the mattress may have.

Waterbeds

Waterbeds are likely the most dust mite resistant beds available. The vinyl covering of a waterbed cannot be penetrated by dead skin cells or dust mites. Dust mites can exist on the surface of the mattress, however. But you can easily wipe clean the vinyl to remove most of them.

It is possible to get waterbed-like dust mite resistance for an innerspring, memory foam or air mattress. To do this, you will need to use a dust mite-resistant covering. While effective, these coverings do not provide 100% protection.

Simmons Beautyrest - How Does it Compare to the Competition?

Simmons Beautyrest is one of the most popular innerspring mattresses available.

But how does it compare in terms of comfort to other popular mattresses, such as Serta and Sealy Posturpedic? And how does it stack up comfort-wise compared to memory foam beds, air mattresses and waterbeds?

To find out, I spent hundreds of hours scouring through dozens of online forums, message boards, shopper websites, etc. assembling data from more than 1,600 people regarding what they think of their beds. What the study results reveal is quite interesting.

How Beautyrest Compares to Other Innerspring Mattresses

According to my research, 44% of Simmons Beautyrest owners indicated that the mattress was comfortable. This percentage is lower than Serta (45%), Kingsdown (52%) and Sealy Posturpedic (65%).

Simmons Beautyrest scoring below the other brands largely because it seemed to have more of a problem with sagging. In other words, many owners reported that the mattress lost support and comfort within three years of purchase because it sagged and / or left body impressions.

How Beautyrest Compares to Memory Foam and Other Types of Mattresses

Simmons Beautyrest did not fair any better against other types of mattresses, according to my research. Memory foam beds (such as Tempur-pedic), airbeds (such as Sleep Number) and waterbeds beat the Beautyrest in terms of comfort by a significant margin.

These other types of mattresses also tend to have other advantages over the Beautyrest. For example, they tend to have more durability, do a better job of discouraging dust mites and allergies, and have little if any need to be flipped.

Despite my research findings regarding the Simmons Beautyrest, it still may be the mattress that best suits you personally. So keep it on your list, but remember its shortcomings and disadvantages.

Best Mattresses - Is Memory Foam, Air, Latex, Water Or Innerspring Better?

If you are looking for information on what's the best mattress, you've come to the right place because I have some important information to share with you.

My research team has recently conducted extensive mattress research by gathering data from over 3,100 mattress owners. This article discusses the different types of mattresses in order of how they scored in our research.

Latex

Latex mattresses as a group scored highest in our research. Over 90% of latex bed owners indicated that they thought their bed was comfortable. Latex mattresses also tend to have fewer disadvantages than other mattress types. For example, latex has good durability and tends to not sleep hot or off gas. A latex bed can also be custom made to suit your firmness preference.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses as a group scored below latex beds and virtually tied with airbeds. About 85% of memory foam owners are pleased with their beds' comfort. The temperature and weight sensitivity of the foam allow it to reduce pressure points and provide good support.

Air

Air beds, such as Sleep Number / Select Comfort, scored about equal to memory foam mattresses. Owners especially like the ability to adjust the firmness of their beds by adding or removing the amount of air inside. Reduced pressure points is another strong advantage of the mattresses.

Water

Waterbeds are not as popular as they used to be, but over 80% of owners find them to be comfortable. The beds have good durability and offer new technology that makes them similar to conventional beds in nearly every way.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses as a group rated last in our research. About 55% of these owners said that their beds are comfortable. The main problem regarding these beds is sagging. According to our findings, the beds have more of a tendency than other mattress types to leave body impressions, which often results in decreased comfort and supportiveness.

Is An Adjustable Air Bed Comfortable?

An adjustable air bed is no longer just a temporary sleeping arrangement for guests staying over. These types of beds are simply a mattress that contains air bladders instead of coil springs. Each side of the bed has the ability to adjust to the support needs of the person sleeping on it. Therefore, each sleeping partner can adjust to his or her specific needs. This is especially important for the person with a back problem that needs to adjust the air support chambers to provide just the right amount of back support and firmness in the bed without disturbing their partner.

An adjustable air bed has the ability to mold and shape to the contour of a person sleeping. Originally designed for hospitals where the need for added support and not as many pressure points was very important to the patients comfort and healing. It was only a matter of time before these beds were made available to the public.

The mattresses are very comfortable due to the ability to spread the weight of the body and the actual contacts points on the mattress in a much more even fashion. People who suffer from allergies find that an adjustable air bed is a good alternative because it is not a breeding ground for dust mites. A coil spring mattress can hold as many as five million dust mites and is the largest area of concentration of these critters in a household.

An adjustable air bed offers more flexibility to the individual because of the ability to fine tune the settings on a nightly basis. The problem with a coil spring mattress is that you cannot make any changes to the settings because there is none. Many people find that they have uncomfortable pressure points when sleeping. As we get older, the more aches and pains we experience. This is likely why the older generation has embraced the change from regular beds over the last several years.

Pressure points also cause problems with the natural alignment of your spine during sleep. If you have a mattress that is too hard it does not allow for the natural curves of the spine. If you sleep on a mattress that is too soft it will also not provide the proper support your spine needs as well. An adjustable air bed will alleviate this problem of sleeping on a mattress that is either too hard or too soft.

There are a number of different adjustable air bed mattresses available on the market today. Do your research and if possible test them out before making your purchase. Your back will thank you for making the change from a traditional coil spring mattress.

Sleep Number Bed Reviews & Ratings - How Does it Compare to Memory Foam, Latex and Innerspring?

If you are considering the Sleep Number Bed, then you've come to the right place because I have important, unique information to share with you.

My research team has gathered data from over 800 Sleep Number Bed owners. This article discusses our findings regarding two main issues: comfort and durability.

Comfort

Nearly 80% of Sleep Number Bed owners in our research indicate that the bed is comfortable. This percentage is about equal to Tempurpedic and most other memory foam beds. And it's in the range of latex mattresses and waterbeds. The Sleep Number Bed clearly beats innerspring mattresses in that around 55% of innerspring bed owners indicate that their beds are comfortable.

Sleep Number Beds owners find the bed to be comfortable because it relieves pressure points and, perhaps more importantly, it is adjustable in regard to firmness. In other words, adding or removing air from the bed increases or decreases the firmness. This allows a person to find a firmness level that perfectly suits his or her personal preference.

Durability

The Sleep Number Bed also performs well overall in regard to durability. It is not uncommon at all, according to our research, for owners to have their beds for 10 or even 15 years with little or no loss of comfort. There is some foam on the bed that can sag and compress overtime, but this does not seem to have much of a negative impact.

The Sleep Number Bed's good durability is fairly unique among mattresses. That's because most beds, especially innerspring mattresses, tend to wear out fairly quickly. It's often difficult to find an innerspring mattress over 10 years old that still provides a good night's sleep.

Adjustable Bed Mattress for the Best Nights Sleep

Adjustable beds are not only very comfortable but also serve great purposes when it comes to the matter of your health. These beds can be adjusted by the push of one button and they are ready to be as par your convenience.

Adjustable beds are great in cases of people who are suffering from back problems. In fact they can find quick solutions in the adjustable beds which will help them to alleviate a large number of health problems. It is true that these beds provide ultimate comfort in the truest sense. When you are opting to select the mattress for your adjustable bed you need to be very careful. In recent times with the increasing popularity of these beds the adjustable bed mattresses are also very much in demand. With the changing times the styles and adjustments have also changed to a considerable extent.

While choosing the adjustable bed mattress also you should note which type will be suited for your purpose. The individuals who suffer from back pain should be over cautious about the type of mattress they would select for their adjustable beds because their choice would depend on the solution for their health and joints problem. If one is not sure about what type of mattress he would choose he should get in touch with a doctor or with an expert in beds and mattresses.

There are many companies who provide and offer various spring and coil mattresses which can be adjusted as par convenience. But it has been noted after vast researches that these mattresses do not prove to be useful in the long run as they really do not work well with a base which is adjustable and often loses its value after a span of five years. However there are various other choices available to you at your fingertips. All these mattresses are especially designed to provide extreme relief to you. They also relieve you from your pressure problems and helps in proper spinal alignment. You are thus able to sleep on a surface which is comparatively more beneficial to your health.

When you are looking for adjustable beds you should always see that you are comfortable in an upright or inclined position. In order to be on the safe side you can go for a trial offer of adjustable bed mattresses. In that way you won't lose out on money. Be careful and take the time to choose the right kind of adjustable mattress for yourself.

Sleep Great With a Tempurpedic Mattress

As to which is the best type of bed and mattress for you, well, that all depends on your age, health, marital status, sleep habits and a lot of other factors. Just make sure you have the exact dimensions of your bed before you go mattress shopping, since bed manufacturers sometimes don´t follow the standard bed sizes exactly.

The basis of any bed is still the mattress and frame, which only vary outwardly in terms of the sizes listed above. A loft bunk bed is technically defined as a bunk bed in which the top of the mattress is more than three feet from the floor. Among the more commonly found characteristics of contemporary platform beds are sleek, straight lines; gently swooping curves; solid, easily discernible finishes and colors; simple, tasteful flourishes and other artistic flairs; the use of high-tech foam as a mattress material; and other characteristics.

Waterbeds are a very popular bedroom option because they provide such a gorgeous sleep and total rest for the entire slumber. However, once you have had a good nights sleep in the waterbed, you won't give the maintenance a second thought.

Prominent adjustable bed manufacturers include Craftmatic, Sleep Comfort, Sealy, Tempur Pedic, and Spring Air. They may be also used by those who are temporarily or permanently bed-ridden to make them sleep more comfortably. Those who have medical conditions that require them to sleep in certain positions generally use adjustable beds.

A word of caution: never compromise quality with cost as the risks involved far outweigh the benefit of having saved a few extra dollars. Perhaps one good tip would be to buy a good quality bunk bed, which can be separated into two twin beds. One should consider the quality of iron when purchasing a wrought iron bed.

The newer and increasingly popular types of bed are usually more traditional in design and are often made from high quality pine. Just because bunk beds look great does not mean that they will be safe and secure and built with quality materials and craftsmanship. Make sure the bunk bed is made of strong, quality materials. A quality bunk bed will have no trouble in supporting you.

You can drastically reduce most sleeping problems with a good quality memory foam mattress, and even more so with an adjustable bed armed with a latex foam mattress or visco-elastic foam mattress. These adjustable beds also come with luxury foam mattresses. There are also different luxury foam mattresses for these adjustable beds.

There are more types of beds and mattresses than Carter has liver pills. Standard or pillow-top mattresses are used, and can be of any size from twin to king. It has to be an adjustable bed mattress because adjustable bed mattresses are specially designed to be flexible and contour to your body, fitting like a glove and easing stress of your spinal alignment.

Just as in adjustable bed prices, adjustable bed mattresses come in a multitude of different materials, sizes and prices. If you need a specific size four poster bed, it is possible to get the beds in any size and have the mattresses custom made as well.

Air beds are generally far cheaper than regular mattresses, and in many cases they are about as comfortable. Flat mattresses provide lesser comfort compared to sleeping inclined which is offered by adjustable beds. The adjustable beds with the new mattresses helps to ease lower back pain by eliminating the pressure points and providing the support you need to get good nights sleep.

Adjustable Bed Mattresses

Many people have problems sleeping these days, and quite a few blame their mattresses - rightly so. If you're plagued by back pain when you sleep, or if your arthritis acts up during the night, you may need a new mattress that makes you feel comfortable and lets you get a good deep sleep. If so, why not try an adjustable bed mattress?

Adjustable bed mattresses are a hot item, and for a good reason - they offer great comfort and help with numerous medical conditions. Because so many people are looking to buy these mattresses, more stores are offering them. People who have medical problems, such as arthritis or other musculoskeletal disorders, prefer these mattresses. They buy them with the confidence that they are getting support, comfort, and the chance for a great night's sleep.

The advantages to using an adjustable bed mattress are many. One of the great features of this mattress is the firmness and softness that an adjustable bed mattress can give you. This allows you to adjust the firmness of the mattress itself until it is ideal for your particular needs and preferences. You will also not need to sacrifice softness or firmness on the sides - most of these beds allow you to adjust the firmness on the sides separately.

However, one of the most popular reasons for buying an adjustable bed mattress is that they conform to your body's contours. These mattresses adjust themselves to the pressure points on joints, back (and neck), and the leg and hip area. It's for this reason that a lot of people with medical conditions find relief on the adjustable bed mattress--they can turn in many different positions that they were not able to on the regular mattress. A full, restful night's sleep is much easier for them.

The adjustable bed mattress also lasts longer than a regular mattress. For instance, if you look at the longevity of the spring mattress, you'll see that the springs wear out over time, or bend under repeated stress. The adjustable bed mattress has no springs, and will outlast the spring mattress.

The adjustable bed mattress has other advantages, too. For one thing, because they're adjustable, it's easier to watch television or read - to do these things you would want you head elevated for comfort. Also, most of these bed mattresses come with massage and heat; this not only makes the person more comfortable, but can help ease pressure and take off a chill.

And if you're concerned about the cost of these adjustable bed mattresses, don't be - many are very affordable, and there are always good deals out there somewhere. Don't sleep on a mattress that's only going to make you toss and turn, lose sleep, and hurt in the morning. Start shopping now for the best deal on your new adjustable bed mattress.

All adjustable bed mattresses are made in modern, state-of-the-art plants using advanced manufacturing techniques. The same expensive parts and manufacturing methodology, quality control and care used to manufacture high priced adjustable hospital beds and dental chairs are used in the construction of adjustable bed beds. Component parts are carefully assembled and rigorously tested for long life and reliability.

The bed's high-strength steel frame is protected from rust and corrosion by dipping in non-toxic lead free enamel paint and also the qualities of the adjustable bed mattresses. The mattresses are constructed using a hot glue laminating process. This technique is designed to prevent mattress components from shifting and interfering with one another during the thousands of flexes adjustable mattresses go through during a lifetime of use.

The mattress has a 312 coil count spring (for Model 1 Full/Double size industry standard bed). The unit contains 312 five turn oil-tempered coil springs that are tied together using a double-knotted tying process with oil-tempered steel helical wire. The adjustable mattress is engineered to bend! Next, a flexing insulator, polypropylene net, is placed over this spring system to isolate it from adjoining layers. A garneted synthetic fiber pad is placed on top of the flexing insulator, then multiple layers of high quality non-allergenic foam cushioning are added. Next a decorator cover of the finest ticking available, a natural cotton & polyester blend product produced to exacting adjustable standards is attached. A hot glue laminating process is used to attach the synthetic fiber pad, layers of foam and overlying ticking in order to extend the life of the mattress and enhance mattress comfort.

The adjustable bed mattresses construction techniques result in a superb dual sided, reversible, dual-density mattress -- luxuriously firm with maximum support on one side, and a plush/soft side with almost 2 additional inches of luxurious fill materials including 1 1/2" of specialized convoluted on the other. All mattresses, regardless of the adjustable bed model they are made for, meet adjustable demanding specifications for comfort, shape retention and support.
