An Alternative to a New Mattress: Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

It's sometimes tough to get that oh so needed good nights sleep we all enjoy, often times it can be our bed or mattress keeping us from enjoying a good nights sleep, how ever you can't afford a new mattress. Coming up with the several hundred to thousand dollars it costs today to get a quality mattress is down right impossible for most of us, so is there an alternative solution to this problem?

You can make your old bed feel like new to you, even if you have a conventional spring mattress. Consider a memory foam mattress topper, also known as a pillow top. With this you can enjoy the comfort and good nights sleep of a new mattress but at a fraction the price.

The material used in these foam mattress toppers, known as memory foam is designed to contour around the curves of your body providing superb support that's needed in the back and hip area. Watch as you get up off of your bed in the morning, and the memory foam springs right back to it's original shape, truly a wonder material.

While there aren't an immense amount of features to a foam mattress topper there is one that's most important. The thickness of the pad is what will make the difference between, feeling better or the same as your old mattress. The thicker the pad, the more support you're going to have in the needed areas around your back and hips. Also the density of the foam can play a role in how much it sinks to contour around your body. A 4 lb density is wonderful but might be tough to find. Many memory foam mattresses come with a 4 density rating, how ever a topper is meant to give your bed a new feel not replace a new bed all together.

Foam memory pillows are also being offered by manufactures to give the added support to the head and neck area. These types of pillows usually don’t wear as quickly as the topper or the mattress.

A great addition if you're purchasing a memory foam mattress topper are memory foam or latex pillows. They provide your neck and head the added support it needs through the night to help keep your spine aligned for a great nights sleep.

Disadvantages of Foam Mattress Toppers

The topper itself from a comfort stand point doesn't really have any downfalls, how ever they don't breath really well. Meaning on warmer evenings you'll tend to sweat more, and you might find yourself needing to sleep more to feel refreshed. Also depending on the thickness of the topper you purchase you might potentially require new sheets to fit over your mattress and the topper.

There Are A Few Things Consumers Should Consider When Choosing Sleeping Mattresses

What should you look for in a mattress? Three things: comfort, support, and durability, from a brand you trust. It's that simple. Comfort, is a matter of personal preference. What feels comfortable to one person may feel uncomfortable to another person. Therefore, whoever is going to use the bed should try several different models before making a purchase.

The UPHOLSTERY of the mattress determines surface comfort. Upholstery† refers to the various layers of material between your body and† the innerspring. Both the type and thickness of these materials will produce different levels of feel and therefore different degrees of comfort.

Sealy Posturepedic mattresses sleep systems offer correct back support regardless of firmness. The myth "firmer is better" is not necessarily true. Your body type determines what comfort is better for you.

A mattress that's too firm for your body will not support all parts of the body evenly, and may cause discomfort at the body's heaviest parts, the shoulders and hips. The increased pressure on these points reduces blood circulation and will cause tossing and turning. This may result in a poor night's sleep and a far less productive day.

Durability is very important. The type of upholstery materials, and the type of steel, and the design of the innerspring impact the durability of the mattress. For example, the coil systems are heat tempered twice, which helps maintain their shape so they last longer.

The box spring, however, provides the greatest measure of durability in a sleep set. It absorbs the major portion of stress and weight placed on the sleep surface. It works much like a "shock absorber" in a car's suspension to eliminate stress in the mattress unit and prolong the mattress comfort life.

When searching for the best mattress, perhaps the most important thing to remember is that mattresses are largely a matter of personal preference.

How Important Are Mattress Ratings When Shopping For a New Mattress?

If you are in the market for a new mattress then consumer mattress ratings might be something that you want to look into. These ratings can give you a good idea of what consumers are saying about products. You get to view the good and the bad so it is always a great idea to do a little research before getting started. Several factors are considered when it comes to consumer ratings and when rating mattresses these factors are considered the most, comfort, durability, external appearance, price point, and warranty. The factors have to be so broad because while one bed might appeal to one person, it might no appeal at all to the other. Some people prefer firm mattresses and others do not care for firm at all.

The mattress ratings have to be developed over a length of criteria because each factor is different to each person while some will be mostly concerned with price and others will be concerned with quality. Often manufacturers conduct their own research to provide ratings for their own promotional ratings. You will want to refer to the genuine ratings before making a purchase. Sometimes the ratings are also conducted on the quality of the materials used. Ratings have shown strong evidence that consumers who are health conscious tend to appeal more to the organic mattresses that are made of organic cotton and soft wool. In addition, special features of mattresses such as anti bacterial and dust mite repellent quality, resistance to flame, hypoallergenic and stress relieving features are not only considered in the ratings but are very important too, especially for allergy sufferers. Another mattress that rates highly is the memory foam mattress which contours to the shape of your body.

The inner components of a mattress are not visible to the naked eye and so people tend to rely on mattress ratings before making purchases because it is in the long run where people will come to discover the advantages or disadvantages of their mattress. One problem is that there does not seem to be a surplus of unbiased mattress reviews available. Mattress reviews are meant to inform the consumer whether a particular make and model is durable, comfortable, constructed well, and value for money. So once you have read through the entire mattress ratings then visit some local stores and check some out before you make your final purchase.

Buying a top rated mattress

Buying your next mattress is an important decision. Not only is a good mattress an expensive purchase, but you'll expect to use your next mattress for many years to come. However, choosing what mattress to buy can be confusing. The consumer is inundated with mattress reviews. Before you buy, you need to know what makes a good quality mattress, what manufacturers make the best mattresses, and what are the types of mattress available to buy.

This site reviews the best mattresses available from only the best manufacturers. Many, are old, well established companies that have been making high quality mattresses for over a hundred years. Names like Sealy, Serta, Jamison and Simmons are universally known because they all make a range of mattress that are made from the best materials and use the latest manufacturing techniques. Other companies, like Tempur-Pedic, are very new but have already become household names because of their revolutionary, NASA inspired memory foam mattresses.

Before you buy, you should decide what you want from a mattress. If you suffer from back pains, you'll want a mattress that provides you with the correct alignment of your neck and spine. Memory foam mattresses claim to give you optimal support. If you suffer from being disturbed from the nighttime turnings of your partner, you'll want a mattress that reduces these movements. The latest spring pocket coil systems claim to minimize disturbance from your partners movements. If you suffer from allergies, you'll want a mattress that is hypo-allergenic. Finally, you'll want to buy a mattress that suits your budget. Some mattresses are more expensive than others; you may be able to find a cheaper mattress that suits your requirements.

Here are some pointers to consider when buying a mattress.

1. Support. It is vital that your mattress gives you the support you need. a top notch mattress will gently support your body and help avoid any pressure points. Pay particular attention to how the mattress support your head and shoulders and your pelvis; these are the heaviest parts of your body and are the parts that require optimal support.

2. Durability. After spending a fair amount of money on your new mattress, you'll want it to last many years. The durability of a mattresses is directly dependent on the quality of the materials used. When buying a mattress you should also consider the warranty that comes with mattress.

3. Size. Don't scrimp on size. Buy the size that suits you and your family. A king size is ideal for a couple who need their own space when they sleep. It also accommodates Sunday mornings when children may jump into bed with mommy and daddy. However, size can be a problem. A king size can be too big for some bedrooms.

Are Memory Foam Mattresses Just a Passing Fad?

Just about everyone has heard of the memory foam mattress phenomenon. But Are the touted benefits of memory foam for real? Will we still be buying visco-elastic mattress in 10 year's time?

They've all come and gone; latex mattresses, air mattresses and water bed mattresses to name but a few. While some people have bought these types of mattresses and swear by the comfort and good sleeping they've found with these types of mattress, it still remains a fact that the most popular mattress is still the spring mattress; as it has been for the last hundred years. So, are memory foam mattresses going to become the most popular mattress for consumers?

Before we try to answer this, let's take a moment so understand why people are talking so much - and buying - memory foam mattress. A memory foam mattress is made from revolutionary visco-elastic foam that was originally developed by NASA. It was a small Danish company who were the first to realize the benefits that this new material would bring to the bedding world. Things really took off when the company was bought by a Swedish company; the Tempur-Pedic was born. Unlike conventional foam, memory foam responds to temperature and weight to conform to the exact contours of the sleeper's body. Because a memory foam mattress evenly supports every inch of the body, pressure points are kept to a minimum. Also, the spine is kept in the correct alignment, even when sleeping on your side. It's true that spring mattresses also respond to weight, but they don't mould themselves to the exact contours of the sleeper - even modern pocket springs systems can't match the support of a visco-elastic foam mattress. One of the most common reasons for not getting a good night's sleep is because of a partner's movements. Unarguably, memory foam mattresses reduce the disturbance caused by a partner moving more than any other type of mattress.

But if we want conclusive proof that a memory foam mattress is more comfortable and orthopedically better for a sleeper than a conventional mattress, we only have to look at what the medical profession is recommending. To date, over 30,000 medical doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths world-wide recommend the TEMPUR Mattress and Neck Pillow.

But will memory foam mattress become as popular as spring mattresses? I believe that they will. At first, the cost of a buying a memory foam mattress was considered too high by many consumers. However, as more mattress manufacturers have started making their own version of memory foam mattresses, prices have come down, so that buying a good quality memory foam mattress is no more expensive than buying a good quality spring mattress. In fact, buying a top rated memory foam mattress can even be cheaper than buying a top rated conventional mattress. Don't take my word that memory foam mattress are going to be the most popular mattress; just take a look at the other leading mattress manufacturers. Venerable companies such as Serta, Sealy, Jamison and many others are also making their own version of a memory foam mattress.

It's true that fads come and go, but every once in a while something comes along that is revolutionary. When something like this comes along, far from being a passing fad, they are responsible for a new dawn - the next leap in technology. Without doubt, the memory foam mattress is revolutionary and is here to stay giving many people, the world over, a better night's sleep.

Tips for Choosing the Right Allergy Mattress Cover

People who suffer from allergies can find it hard to get sleep. They often suffer frequent bouts of sneezing, runny nose, and itching that can keep them up all night long.

To make it worst, the bed which is supposed to be the most restful place in the house can contain a lot of allergens that can trigger allergic reactions. Those who are prone to allergies can suffer from itchy skin, hay fever and other allergic symptoms because of the dust, pollen, and even dust mites that are present in their beds. If you are allergic to a lot of things, then you can benefit from an allergy mattress cover that will help you to get the rest that you need.

However, you should know that not every allergy mattress cover will suit your needs. A hypoallergenic mattress cover has to be very well made if it is to be effective. It has to be produced in a completely sterile factory with materials that will not irritate the skin and aggravate allergies themselves. It should also be designed to have holes that are small enough to prevent the infestation of dust mites. An allergy mattress cover can help keep you away from allergens and help you get enough sleep, but it will not make all of your allergies go away.

In general, an allergy mattress cover only reduces your exposure to contaminants that may have seeped into your bed. This means that you have to take certain actions to keep your exposure to allergens at a minimum, in addition to your allergy mattress cover. A hypoallergenic mattress cover is almost useless in dealing with airborne dust, mold, fungus and pollen.

You also have to keep your house clean if you want to reduce your exposure to allergens. You also need to change your bedding frequently, even if you have an allergy mattress cover. It would also help if you can keep your floor and all surfaces in your house clean, and ensure that your air intake is kept in tip top shape. Not many people realize that allergies can be caused by furnace contamination or by things leaking in to the air ducts leading up to their houses. Nevertheless, an allergy mattress cover can help reduce your allergic reactions and help you get the sleep that you need.

Is a Box Spring Necessary for the Mattress-Bed?

Do I need a Box Spring for my Mattress? This question comes up at least once during bed shopping for 90% of all people. And for good reason. Box Springs are a multi-million dollar, multi-million tree chopping industry. So in light of the green revolution (re-co-lu-tion?) these days, one can only wonder: is there really a reason for all the senseless killing of defenseless trees just to have an extra foot of wood, fabric, and air underneath your fully functional mattress? As it turns out, the answer is both a resounding no with a hint of yes. The real kicker here is that most modern box springs don't actually have "springs" in them, which basically leaves just the "box" part as a truth. And this is exactly what they are, a wood-framed box covered with fabric. All of the bells, whistles, and 21st century technology go into the mattress part of the bed, which, if you were a well-informed bed shopper, could take on all sorts of exotic construction from innerspring, foam, visco-elastic (memory) foam, flotation (water), or air.

Since most box springs are hard, mattresses are designed to work perfectly well on just about any firm, hard surface. The floor is one. I've slept on a mattress on the floor for a good 8 years, and I can personally vouch for the undiminished comfort of such a setup. If there is one key argument for box springs, it is that certain touted mattress manufacturers will claim that a box spring can extend the life of a mattress. This statement is true only to the extent of the box spring providing additional spring cushioning, absorbing some of the wear that is normally exhibited onto the mattress itself. These manufacturers typically provide a box spring with their mattress, one that they say is specifically designed to be used with that mattress.

Realistically, from all of the research I have done on this (and with a girlfriend that constantly debates this point with me, I've done my share of research), I have concluded that box springs only do two things well, and that is 1. increase the overall height of the bed, and 2. soften the overall firmness of the bed (given that the box spring is not extremely firm). Helping the mattress last longer is a distant, distant, and arguable third. As a person who neither cares for a tall bed, nor a soft bed, I found that platform beds are the most stylishly modern, environmentally-friendly pieces of furniture to complement my mattress. You simply don't need a box spring for your mattress/bed.

What Are The Different Mattress Measurements?

Many people simply focus on the manufacturer and the soft or hardness they are looking for when choosing a mattress. What is often overlooked are the measurements of the different mattresses. You need to consider before choosing the right mattress for you and your partner is the length and width. These measurements account for movement during the night, the size of the people sleeping and the length of the people sleeping. The last thing you want is to get your mattress home and sleep with your feet hanging off the end each and every night.

The measurements of the USA mattresses are as follows:

• Twin Size: 39" wide X 75" long
• Long Twin Size: 39" wide X 80" long
• Double / Full: 54" wide X 75" long
• Queen Size: 60" wide X 80" long
• California King Size: 72" wide X 84" long
• King Size: 78" wide X 80" long

These are the standard measurements for mattresses of all brands and manufacturers. You will find that by simply knowing this information your success in purchasing a high quality and most importantly comfortable mattress will increase.

With so many different factors to consider when buying a mattress it can be easy to neglect the measurements and it is important to remember that these measurements are not only important for your sleep comfort but for your room as well. Someone with a small bedroom should not be investing in a king size bed that will take up every inch of space, just as someone else with a large room should consider a larger bed than a twin. These are all factors that need to be taken into consideration before a mattress is purchased.

A Guide To Top-Rated Mattresses

With so many different mattresses and brands available looking for your next mattress can be rather daunting. To make your choice easier you should try to buy one of the top-rated mattresses from a leading mattress manufacturer. While not exhaustive, the following mattress reviews will help you narrow down your search for your next mattress.

Below is a concise mattress review of the top brands of mattresses on the market today. Each mattress manufacturer offers something slightly different so choosing the best mattress is really deciding on what your requirements are and how much you want to spend.

Sealy Posturepedic Mattress

Sealy have been making mattresses since 1818 and is the largest selling brand in the United States. Because Sealy mass-produces mattresses in such large numbers, the company affords today’s mattress shopper the best mid priced mattress sets available. Sealy offers a wide selection that blends comfort and durability with value to provide the best mid priced mattresses. As well as the Sealy Posturepedic mattress, there is also the Sealy TrueForm mattress, which incorporates memory foam in its build.

Simmons Beautyrest Mattress

Pocket coil mattresses offer one big advantage over traditional spring mattresses: you aren't disturbed by your partner's tossing and turning. Unlike conventional spring mattresses, each spring is contained in its own pocket, so move movement of one spring doesn't cause movement of other around it. The pocket coil mattress isn't new; Simmons has been producing a pocket coil mattress since 1925. Trademarked as the “Do Not Disturb” mattress, Simmons claims that its pocketed coil reduces more motion between partners than any other mattress in the industry today. Depending on the size of the mattress and other options, the Simmons Beautyrest ranges from mid-price range to expensive.

Jamison Smart Coil Mattress

Inner springs aren't new, however Jamison has taken the innerspring a stage further. Jamison took the world's best coil - the tempered steel, fine wire LFK coil which is open-ended and double offset - and engineered it to produce the Jamison Smart Coil. Smart Coils are put together with alternating right-turn and left-turn construction. This means that when weight is applied, the two coils work in tandem, thereby reducing partner disturbance. You can find this inner spring system in the Jamison Balance, Equalizer, and Vita Pedic mattresses. Jamison mattresses may not be as well known as the big players like Serta or Sealy, but they have a reputation for making excellent mattresses. Prices of Jamison mattress range from above mid-price to expensive.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress

If you've been looking for a new mattress you've probably heard about memory foam. This new and amazing material responds to body heat and weight to mould to the exact shape of the sleeper's body. What this means is that weight is distributed evenly and therefore optimal support is given whilst sleeping and so almost completely eliminates pressure points.

This visco-elastic material first saw use in hospitals as an aid to sleep for those with back problems or pressure sores, but has recently been introduced to the general public. Tempur-Pedic was the company that pioneered the research and use of this new mattress. Many other manufacturers have now developed their own version of memory foam mattresses but a Tempur-Pedic memory foam remains the best. Tempur-Pedic mattresses aren't cheap but you're buying the last technical advances in mattress design.

There's More To Offer Than Just The Sealy PosturePedic

Sealy is the world's largest mattress manufacturer but most folks just know about the Sealy PosturePedic collection. But the company makes more than just the traditional innerspring kind, it also makes latex and the latest technical innovation; the memory foam mattress.

The Sealy PosturePedic range of mattresses is its core brand. The mattress was originally designed with the help of orthopedic surgeons. Until recently, manufacturers made mattresses without seeking any help from the medical profession; most still do. But, if you're seriously telling your customers that yours is going to support them better and give them a more restful night's sleep then you really ought to be designing and testing your product with healthcare professionals.

Of course Sealy aren't the only manufacturer now doing this, others like Kingsdown and Restonic are also designing mattresses with the help of the medical profession. In fact, the Kingsdown mattress is now sold in conjunction with the customer being analyzed using its patented Dormo-Diagnostics Sleep Machine - a computer program analyses your body shape, and weight distribution and compares this against medical studies involving millions of people. If you're thinking of buying a Sealy PosturePedic you should also take a look at the Kingsdown Body System mattress for comparison.

The Sealy SpringFree mattress is made from 100% latex. It's comprised of a solid high-density core and is laminated with different densities of latex foam to provide support and maximum comfort. Latex had gone out of fashion but it is becoming fashionable once again, due in part to the popularity of memory foam. Many want the pressure relieving properties of memory foam but want a safer product that is also not heat sensitive so the body molding effect is instantaneous. The latex used in the SpringFree collection is synthetic. If you prefer natural latex then check out the Jamison Talalay mattress.

The Sealy TrueForm mattress is a memory foam mattress. Memory foam is viscoelastic foam that is both weight and heat sensitive and conforms to the exact shape of the person lying down on it. Unlike other mattresses, this has been shown to distribute weight far more evenly and so minimize pressure points. All viscoelastic mattresses are made using a base block of high-density (non-memory) foam on top of which is laminated one or several layers of memory foam. All good memory foam should have a minimum of 5 lbs/cubic foot density - the TrueForm has 5.2 lbs.

Sealy make three different mattresses in the TrueForm collection; the 8, 9 and 11 Series. Each offers the same base layer but different configurations of the top, memory foam layers.

There is far more on offer than just the Sealy PosturePedic mattress. Both the latex and memory foam collections offer the consumer more choice as to type they want. Many consumer mattress reviews give all types a good overall rating. However, finding the perfect one is a very subjective matter and you are best advised to try out as many with as many brands - like the Jamison and Kingsdown mattress mentioned above - as you can before you buy.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress or Sealy TrueForm Mattress-Which Is Best?

Memory foam mattresses are the new sensation in the mattress world and for god reason; there’s no doubting the benefits to be had on sleeping on a viscoelastic mattress. The first to manufacture the memory foam mattress was Tempur-Pedic and the company remains the market leader with this type of mattress. But do other brands, like the Sealy TrueForm Mattress, match the Tempur-Pedic mattress in terms of support, comfort and price?

With most comparisons you must try to compare like with like. Some for the following comparisons I will pitch the Tempur-Pedic CelebrityBed mattress to that of the Sealy TrueForm 11 Series mattress. Both of these mattresses are at the high-end of both quality and pricing for both companies. For the lower-end of the price category one should compare the Tempur-Pedic Classic mattress to the Sealy TrueForm 8 Series mattress but I won’t compare these models.

First off let’s be clear on one point. Both Tempur-Pedic and Sealy have different, patented memory foam; the memory foam is not supplied by a common source rather, both Tempur-Pedic and Sealy have researched, developed and manufacture their own distinct versions. Now let’s take a look at both products.

The Tempur-Pedic Mattress

The CelebrityBed mattress is Tempur-Pedic’s top-end mattress. It’s constructed with the Tempur-Pedic AirFlow System (a convoluted HR base), which is comprised of 2 4.3”support layers of proprietary TEMPUR material. The convoluted base helps to dissipate body heat, something that was always a problem with memory foam mattress. On top of the AirFlow System comes a 2.8" base layer (5.3 lb/ft3 density). Finally, you get one, 2” pillow top comfort layer (5.3 lb /ft3 density) memory foam. The mattress itself is contained in a removable cover; 67.5% cotton, 25% polyester, 7.5% cashmere, which can be easily unzipped for washing.

The Sealy TrueForm Mattress

The Sealy memory foam mattress is also multilayered, consisting of 2 layers of foam. The 9 Series from Sealy consists of a 6" poly core (made of high-density foam), 3.5" of regular visco (memory foam) and 1.5" of convoluted visco. The convoluted later of the Sealy TrueForm, like that of the Tempur-Pedic mattress) is designed to draw away body heat. Interestingly the convoluted layer of the Sealy forms the top layer whereas the convoluted layer of the Tempur-Pedic forms the base of the mattress. Which is more effective is hard to say. The Sealy TrueForm 9 Series also comes with a zip-off velour cover with added cashmere.

So how does each mattress compare. The Tempur-Pedic mattress is slightly heavier than the Sealy mattress. However, as neither mattress requires any flipping, weight is not an issue. You can get a box spring for each mattress – personally, this is a complete waste of money). However, the Sealy TrueForm mattress is compatible with Sealy’s PowerBase, so you can adjust the mattress to various positions, program in your favorite positions and even get a massage – I prefer to get a massage administered by human hand rather than a machine, but I suppose the Powerbase is great for watching television.

Both mattresses come with a 20 year limited warranty.

The most important question though is which mattress gives the best support and comfort. I have tested both mattresses and can honestly say that I could not rate the Tempur-Pedic mattress over the Sealy, or vice-versa. I have heard some comments that the memory foam used in the Sealy TrueForm mattress is slightly softer than that used in the Tempur-Pedic CelebrityBed – I didn’t notice this but perhaps I’m not as sensitive as some.

In conclusion I would rate the Sealy TrueForm higher than that of the Tempur-Pedic mattress, purely based on price. The Sealy mattress is substantially cheaper than that of the Tempur-Pedic, so why pay more? I sometimes wonder if the high price of a Tempur-Pedic mattress is so high because the company advertizes so much or, perhaps, it believes people will pay more because it is the market leader.

A Review Of The Sealy Posturepedic Mattress

Sealy is one of the most well-known mattress manufacturers and have been making mattresses for longer than most. Many reviews give them a fairly decent score; the opinion generally being that they make a good quality mattress if somewhat overpriced. So what do you get for your money when you buy a Sealy Posturepedic mattress?

First off, Sealy Posturepedic does not refer to one mattress; rather Posturepedic is a generic term for a range of the company's mattresses. What is common to all these mattresses is the incorporation of the Sealy Comfort System, which comprises the following elements; a claim that the company uses the most advanced inner spring available and that it combines orthopedically correct support, advanced Comfort Materials and UniCased Edge Design.

Now let's get something straight: most mattress manufacturers claim that the springs used in their mattresses are the best you can buy but did you know that all of the well-known mattress companies (there are exceptions) get their coils from a single company, Leggett and Platt, for their highest-end mattresses down to their lowest. Also, other manufacturers state that they place their coils in such a way as to give you the best orthopedically correct support - what they mean is they place more coils, or heavier gauge coils under the shoulder and hip area.

The Sealy Posturepedic mattress also comes with a UniCased Edge Design. This gives the mattress a firmer edge, the idea being that your weight doesn't push the mattress out sideways so giving you more support. Again, this is nothing new or unique; I don't know of any top rated mattress that doesn't come with some sort of edging support.

The company also recommends that when your purchase a Sealy Posturepedic that you also purchase the box spring set to go with the mattress. The company claims that a box spring acts like a big shock absorber giving the sleeper even more comfort. But I find this explanation a little hard to swallow. Springs on top of springs? Surely the coils in the mattress should be good enough to give you the support and comfort you need. In my opinion box springs are not necessary, add to the cost and are a good little earner for the mattress manufacturer. Most Europeans use platform beds - no box spring set - and we don't seem to hear them complaining about alack of support or comfort.

We're also told that the materials used are hypo-allergenic and flame resistant. This is standard for all top end mattresses.

The are three basic models to the Sealy Posturepedic range; the Posturepedic, which has the features described above; the Body Series, which is claimed to be the most luxurious in the range; and the Reserve Collection, which features a memory foam layer on top of the mattress.

The above review of Sealy Posturepedic mattresses is quite short. You can find more detailed reviews on the net, many from individuals who have purchased the mattress. Most find the mattress to be quite comfortable though somewhat overpriced. A good mattress but perhaps, no better than other brand name mattresses.

The Sealy Mattress-Quality and Comfortable Mattresses

For some items, cheaper isn’t better. When you are investing in a major purchase, such as a computer or a kitchen appliance, you want a quality brand that you know and trust. The same goes for buying a mattress. The average person who gets the recommended six to eight hours of sleep per night spends one third of his life in bed. That should qualify a mattress as a major purchase. When purchasing a new mattress, look for top brand names that ensure quality and comfort.

Well established markets, for any goods, are often recognized on a global scale. For consumers, this recognition is a promise of quality from that brand. A highly popular brand is not going to undercut their top position by putting an inferior product on the market under their name.

Popular brands depend largely on customer loyalty. A customer who buys an inferior product from a globally known brand will probably not remain loyal for very long. Before Buying A Mattress Review Consumer Reports on Mattresses

When you look over consumer reports on mattresses you may find a lot of diversity but if you think about it, it only makes sense. If you consider how a couple may review it versus how an individual might rate one. There are a lot of different pieces to consider but broken up into segments consumer reports look a little bit like this.

Keep in mind that this is an unbiased source that took the consumer reports and what they found was most couples prefer the Simmons Beauty rest line is the best innerspring mattress. To be more specific, the Beauty rest World Class line has a no-flip design and the Simmons Triton Foundation make for a bed set that never starts to sag. This set has edge to edge support and has the inner pocket coils, which are individual coils rather than coils that are all attached. This is a great concept in keeping the motion in control. Depending on where you make your purchase and exactly which type you decide on you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,000-$2,500.

Heavier people do need to make special considerations when purchasing a mattress as they need extra support from sagging. If you sleep alone then it is not mandatory to buy it with inner pocket coils, according to consumer reports. The continuous coils on the Sealy Posturepedic work great if only one person is sleeping on the mattress. It has heavy gauge coils and offers extra support so this is the model of choice according to consumer reports. Consumers report that you should expect to pay somewhere around $450-$1,300 for that type of mattress.

Consumers rate the viscoelastic Tempur-Pedic as the choice for anyone who suffers from spine or back injuries and this claim is supported by chiropractors and doctors alike. Consumers do report that there is an adjustment period with this one before you will achieve maximum comfort and satisfaction. There also were some minor discrepancies regarding temperature. Some consumers claim that in cold weather, the mattress became much more firm and others reported that it trapped body heat. This one is around $1,800 including the foundation in a queen size.

The Sleep Number mattress uses inflatable air chambers to adjust firmness with a remote control. Consumer's reports on it were not as good as expected. Many consumers claim that this bed is overpriced and not as comfortable as they thought it would be, especially after all of the fancy commercials claiming that both sleep partners sill have maximum comfort as each side of the bed can be adjusted according to their own comfort. It is always best to read consumer reports before making any purchase so you can see what other people who have purchased the same product have to say about it.

Has Sealy Been Caught Napping

Sealy is the grand-old-daddy of mattresses. Very few other mattress manufacturers have been making mattresses as long as Sealy and few could match the quality and comfort of a Sealy mattress. But, with the introduction of new mattress types such as, air, latex and memory foam mattresses, does a Sealy mattress rate as highly as it used to?

For many years the Sealy mattress scored highly in consumer reviews and there is no denying the quality of a Sealy mattress. The materials used in a Sealy mattress have always been the best available. Combined with the innerspring system - heavy gauge that are heat tempered twice to help maintain their shape - a Sealy mattress was one of the most comfortable and reasonably priced quality mattresses you could buy. For consumers who appreciate a traditionally made mattress of the highest quality, the Sealy mattress has always been the mattress of choice.

But not everyone has been satisfied with the old-fashioned mattress. Many consumers with back problems have found the comfort and support of mattresses made from modern materials to be more beneficial. Companies like Tempur-Pedic have stormed onto the world stage of mattresses. The viscoelastic mattress has given many people the first good night's sleep they've known for many years. Although there is still a high demand for innerspring mattresses, there's no denying the rising popularity of memory foam mattresses. Does this mean that Sealy is no longer the best mattress you can buy?

The answer is that Sealy still makes some of the finest mattresses money can buy. The Sealy innerspring mattress is still one of the best and most top rated of mattresses. But Sealy haven't been slow to recognise the therapeutic benefits of memory foam mattresses and have begun manufacturing their own version. As you might expect, Sealy has put a lot of time, money and effort into the development of its own version of a memory foam mattress. The result has been the introduction of the Sealy PosturePedic TrueForm mattress. The Sealy TrueForm mattress responds to weight and body temperature to conform to the exact body shape of the sleeper thereby delivering orthopedically correct alignment of the neck and spine. The secret of this mattress is that Sealy have used a multi-layered foam core that provides a custom feel that is unique for every one who sleeps on it. The TrueForm mattress comes with FlameGuard to protect against fire and also comes with a mattress cover that zips right off for easy cleaning. Sealy are so confident that the consumer will find the TrueForm mattress the most comfortable mattress they've ever slept on that the mattress comes with a 20-year limited warrantee.

The Sealy memory foam mattress comes in three models; to suit all requirements and budgets. The 11-series comes with 1.5" layer of convoluted memory foam - for added comfort - on a 3.5" memory foam core. The base consists of a 6" high-density foam layer. The 9-series comes with a 3" memory foam core, again with a 6" high-density foam layer. The 8-series comes with a 3" memory foam core and 5" high-density foam layer. All models come with a washable, zip-off cover.

Sealy also makes a spring-free latex mattress - perfect for those who are especially allergic to any household allergens. The Sealy SpringFree latex mattress also comes with the Sealy rigid box spring to support the mattress for long-lasting performance.

So have Sealy caught up with new technological advances in mattress manufacture? It would seem so. However, Sealy memory foam mattresses haven't been on the market as long as Tempur-Pedic and it remains to be seen if their version rates as highly as Tempur-Predic.

Sealy have been the market leader in making high quality mattress for many years. The Sealy mattress rates highly in consumer reports and Sealy has millions of satisfied customers. If you prefer the more old-fashioned, inner spring system the a Sealy mattress represents good value for money for a high quality .

Choosing the right mattress can make all the difference in the world. A poor mattress will make you feel uncomfortable, unable to sleep and maximize your aches and pains. History of the Sealy Brand

In 1881, Daniel Haynes started using cotton to make mattresses for his family and friends in a small town in Texas called Sealy. Cotton was relatively new to mattress making, but it had widespread use in making clothing. The cotton mattresses were found to be so comfortable that in 1889, Haynes created and was granted a patent on a machine that compressed cotton for use in mattress making.

Daniel Haynes decided to sell his cotton compression patent, along with all other mattress patents and ideas, to fellow Texan Earl Edwards, in 1906. Edwards was an advertising executive working for the Sealy Company. Edwards improved upon the original product design and made the mattress known to the world.

It wasn’t until 1950 that the Sealy Posturepedic mattress became available to the general public. By the time the Sealy Posturepedic mattress was released on the market, Sealy had already gained its reputation in quality and comfort. Not until 1995 did Sealy make the decision to expand and offer their products to the international market. International exposure gave Sealy amazing success while ensuring that millions of people would sleep comfortably on a Sealy Posturepedic mattress.

Do You Need a Sealy Posturepedic Mattress?

A healthy body and mind come from healthy sleeping habits. A good night’s sleep requires comfort and support that can only be offered by a durable and firm mattress. A Sealy Posturepedic mattress combines all the requirements of a perfect night of sleep into one quality mattress. The Sealy Company has spent the past 125 years improving its products to provide consumers with the best mattress for a better night’s sleep. Sealy offers a wide selection that blends comfort and durability with value to provide the best mid priced mattresses.

Mattress Shopping: Peaking Under The Hood

When purchasing a mattress, sometimes it is daunting or near-impossible to really conduct a thorough comparison shopping sessions because there are no universal standards that apply across the mattress and bedding industry.

However in many cases depending on the store you visit, there is a cross section view of their mattresses available for observation. From here is where you can get a better idea of what gives a particular mattress it's "personality".

The very outside layer of a mattress is called ticking. Usually the ticking's material is made out of polyester and/or cotton. Some other mattresses may have vinyl based ticking. These are usually found the cheaper mattresses.

In almost all cases there's an additional quilt that pads over the ticking. This is primarily for show only and doesn't have any real ramification with regards to the mattress quality.

The central padding is right below this quilted layer and usually is made up of foam. Press down on the foam to see if it's soft and comfortable to touch.

On top of the springs you will find the insulation padding which essentially prevents a person using the mattress to feel the springs. Coco pad generally makes this layer stiffer so that you decrease the likelihood of hitting the springs while lying on the mattress.

Other important elements include the coils which is measured in terms of gauges. The lower the number the firmer the mattress. Finally we have the foundation of a mattress called the box spring which helps put everything together.

Natural Latex Mattress Is the New Foam

A natural latex mattress is the new wave in mattress cores. They have already moved through Europe and are now making their way to the United States. These mattresses offer a firm, but comfortable nights sleep. Even mainstream companies, like Sealy, are beginning to make latex mattresses.

The natural latex comes from countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, or Indonesia. It comes from the Hevea brasiliensis tree that is grown in the area on large tree plantations. The latex is harvested by removing thing strips of bark from the trees and allowing the substance to flow down the grooves into collection cups.

Finding a mattress that is all natural may be a difficult process. Most companies use a blend of synthetically made latex and natural latex to create their mattresses. This makes the core more resilient, according to the companies. The Naturalists are quick to disagree with this theory. They believe that there is a difference and that only an all natural latex mattress will be as durable as people desire. Since the price of these mattress can be much more than traditional mattresses (which need to be replaced every 5 to 10 years), it is important that they last a long time.

According to most experts, the natural latex mattress will last almost indefinitely. It is dense, but comfortable – mainly due to pincore holes placed through out the mattress. The larger the pincore holes, the softer the mattress.

Finding the natural latex mattress could be as simple as a few clicks of the keyboard, but remember that many companies are using a blend. Ask questions, check the company’s history, and make sure the mattress you purchase is completely natural.

While the expense may seem like a lot in the present, buying a natural latex mattress is an investment into the future. This may be one bed that you can actually hand down to your children with pride (and something that they want as well).

Organic Bedding and Organic Mattresses by Prescription Only?

Effective January 1, 2005, California law requires all mattresses contain chemical based fire retardancy for "public safety". This law may become national within a year, and is under consideration by the Consumer Products Safety Commission. California residents can buy chemical-free organic mattresses with a letter or prescription from a doctor, which can be mailed or faxed to at time of purchase. Unfortunately, this legislation may eventually extend to organic bedding and organic clothing.

The primary chemicals required to meet state and federal flammability guidelines include Boric Acid (which effectively kills roaches), PBDE's, Formaldehyde, Decabromodiphenyl Oxide, Melamine, Zinc Borate, Vinylidiene Chloride, and Antimony Trioxide.

Up to 1 1/2 pounds of these deadly chemicals saturate just the surface of a larger size mattress!

It's not that legislators aren't aware of the toxicity and health risks of these chemicals. The law grudgingly nods to purchasing organic mattresses by prescription only. Imagine having to pay a doctors visit just to purchase organic bedding and clothing as well. For those with health insurance, an inconvenience. For those without health insurance, a potentially devastating and insurmountable health menace.

Your family spends 8 hours every day lying prone on mattresses, and will steadily inhale these toxins for years. This is being mandated by law regardless of scientific proof that these chemicals are highly carcinogenic, cause high prenatal mortality, birth defects, reduced fertility, plus liver, kidney, brain and heart damage. Americans with allergies, asthma and multiple chemical sensitivities, are keenly at risk. Infants are notoriously vulnerable to Boric Acid poisoning.

The authors of the legislation have good intentions, and expect to save 300 lives every year from mattress-ignited fires. Over 40 years, this law could harm more than 100 million people as a direct result of chemical saturation.

Organic bedding with wool fill and organic mattresses, naturally meet and exceed fire retardant standards in all cases, but will never contain a dram of toxic chemical inputs.

If this law becomes national, doctors will hopefully suffer an epidemic of writers cramp, and judging from their strenuous opposition to this legislation, will be more than happy to continue writing prescriptions for safe, healthy organic mattresses, and if necessary, organic bedding and clothing as well.

If you need a new waterbed mattress, there are a variety of things you should know. For starters, waterbed mattresses come in different levels of firmness. Since even the firmest waterbed is less firm than a traditional bed, most experts recommend buying the firmest waterbed mattress that you can afford.

Let’s take a look at the different types of waterbed mattresses:

Free Flow: as its name suggests, a free flow mattress allows the water to flow freely. This makes the bed feel as though it is always gently rocking. Sleeping on a free flow waterbed mattress is much like sleeping on a boat. This type of mattress is not recommended for someone who desires support. Some people have trouble sleeping on a bed that moves freely with every toss and every turn. In addition, the free flow mattress doesn’t have any mechanism to balance it. This means that if one partner is larger or heavier than the other, the mattress will be lopsided.

Hydraulic: a hydraulic waterbed mattress is filled with tiny round vinyl coils. These coils fill with water and float just beneath the top of the mattress. This helps to regulate the movement of the water. The more coils a mattress has, the firmer it will be. In addition, the coils help to balance out the bed. This means that even if one partner is heavier than the other, they will stay on the same level.

Fiber Fill: in fiber filled waterbed mattresses, the manufacturer fills the mattress with fiber. This helps to reduce the movement of the water and to increase the firmness of the mattress. The more fiber the mattress has, the firmer it will be.

Waterbed mattresses are available at many online stores, including My Waterbed Shop, All Waterbeds, Bedroom Discounters, and Simmons.

For additional waterbed mattress resources, do an Internet search for “waterbed mattress.” Also check your local bedding, mattress, and furniture stores.

Pocketed Coil Mattress Reviews

What follows is a short review of the most popular and top rated pocket coil mattresses. Pocketed coil mattresses have been around for about 80 years and many people find this type of mattress the most comfortable, especially those whose sleep with a partner whose weight is substantially heaver or lighter than themselves.

Pocketed coils are individual steel inner-spring coils encapsulated in pockets. These are then attached to form the mattress. Because the springs are not interconnected there is more motion separation than conventional inner-spring mattresses. All top rated pocketed coil mattresses use high-tempered steel coils. Additionally, each mattress manufacturer has unique design points that separate them from their competitors. Pocketed coil mattresses are also married together with a variety of materials such as, latex, silk or wool fibres or memory foam, which gives each mattress an unique feel of support and comfort.

Jamison Pocketed Coil Mattress

Jamison marries its pocketed coils to a variety of materials including Talalay Latex, Temperature Sensitive Memory Foam, or Omalon, each one offering the consumer different comfort requirements. Unlike other manufacturers Jamison has joined the coil pockets at the center creating a 'free-floating system' that, it claims, provides 100% coil conformity. The company also claims that the Jamison pocket coil mattress has 27% more support in the center zone than its competitors where you body needs it most giving you correct spinal alignment. There are many manufactures of pocketed coil mattresses and whether you really do get 27% more support than other mattresses on the market is debatable. You can choose firm, plush to pillow top in Jamison Pocketed Coil mattresses.

Overall mattress rating: 3/5

Sealy Correct Comfort Mattress

Sealy's patented PostureTouch pocketed coil system claims to be the most advanced in the industry - but what manufacturers doesn't claim to offer the most advanced system? The PostureTouch coil has been designed to be initially soft to the touch becoming progressively firmer as weight is applied, thereby giving both comfort and support. The Sealy pocketed coil mattress also comes with the MiracleEdge edge that encases the pockets of coils, which the company claims gives consistent comfort and support at every point across the mattress.

Overall mattress rating: 4/5

Simmons Beautyrest mattress

The Simmons pocketed coil mattress selling point is its unique 'two storey coil on coil' construction. Basically, what this means is you get a top layer of coils designed to conform to your body shape thereby giving you the comfort you want whereas the bottom layer of firmer coils provide the support. The mattress also comes with 'Ultra 360 degree Foam Encasement'. This feature consists of 3 inches of high density foam edge support giving the mattress consistent support right to the edge. You can upgrade to Visco Memory Foam, Latex Foam, and combinations of Visco Memory and Latex Foam and all mattresses come in Firm, Plush or Pillow Top comfort options.

Overall mattress rating: 3/5

Pocketed Coil mattresses remain a popular choice for many. The biggest downside to pocketed coil mattresses is there durability: a pocketed coil mattress will not last as long as an inner-spring mattress. Therefore it is essential to purchase a good quality pocketed coil mattress from a top rated mattress manufacturer.

Visco Pedic Mattresses Are Out of This World!

The visco pedic mattresses are also known as “Memory Foam”. The memory foam mattresses trace their origin to N.A.S.A where they were used to protect astronauts from the high pressure of gravitational force when they flew into space.

The specialty of the memory foam was that it was designed to conform to the shape of the astronaut’s bodies based on their bodies’ temperature and weight. This provided excellent support to the astronaut’s body over long periods of time.

This foam became very popular and it was used by the medical fraternity for healing patients and later it was realized it could be used at home also. As a result, memory foam transformed into visco pedic mattresses and made an entry into the public markets.

What makes visco pedic mattresses so unique is a combination of several properties that provide the most comfortable sleeping experience available for you. Let us consider what these are.

THE NAME OF THE GAME: Why these mattresses are called “Memory Foam” actually reflects on their unique properties. The name may be a way to describe the foam's ability to mold to your body's contours while you lie on it.

When you change positions or get up out of bed, the foam slowly regains its original flat surface until the next time you use it. The mattresses are capable of "remembering" and resuming its original shape after every use. This is one of the most valuable assets of the visco-pedic mattress. It actually remembers!!

PRESSURE TACTICS: When reclining on a mattress made of memory foam your body will gently sink into it. This is because the mattress is made up of individual castles of foam and each one respond to your body’s shape and temperature.

The result will be that the natural hollows of your body, like those in your neck, knees, shoulders back etc, will be cradled leading to a feeling of gentle support. The joints in your body, along with the muscles, will be relaxed, leading to a feeling of weightlessness, all enabling you to nod off to sleep gently.

If you compare this sensation with that of sleeping on an ordinary mattress, either spring, coil or ordinary foam, you will find that these mattresses expect your body to conform to their surfaces, which are rigid. These mattresses actually push upwards and will cause a pressure build up in your body, in an attempt to make your body adapt to their flat surfaces.

The ultimate result will be a reduction in blood supply and terrible discomfort. This will cause more unpleasantness to sufferers of chronic back pain. You will have to alter the position you are sleeping in to make yourself comfortable, and this will disturb your sleep.

DON’T BUG ME: Memory foam mattresses or vicso pedic mattresses have been found not to breed dust mites. These dust mites are harmful to sufferers of allergies, asthma and other related respiratory problems. These bugs are found to inhabit the materials which cover the mattresses.

MAKE-UP: The visco-pedic mattress is usually made of 100% visco-elastic memory foam. The foam has the unique specialty of responding to the body’s temperature and shape, thus making sleep very comfortable.

The visco-memory foam is specially formulated polyurethane foam that allows foam to change its firmness based upon your body's temperature. The visco memory foam eliminates the localized pressure caused by other mattresses and reacts to your body's temperature causing the foam to become softer.

Visco pedic mattresses are the better alternative for a better night’s sleep. If you are tired of your regular mattress and are looking for that special something guaranteeing a restful night, the visco-pedic mattress is for you.
