Air Bed Mattresses Provide Adjustable Comfort

In this day and age, air bed mattresses are not pigeon-holed as being only temporary solutions for sleeping arrangements. More and more, an inflatable air mattress is replacing the traditional metal spring mattresses that often cause sleeping problems and can be the cause of painful back conditions.

One of the advantages of air beds, is that they can be fine-tuned to your personal comfort level. In some instances, a person may need to change the firmness of their adjustable air bed from one night to the next, depending on the activities they were engaged in during the day or if they stressed or twisted their back. It is simply impossible with traditional mattress beds to have this kind of flexibility, in order to get the best sleep possible.

One of the benefits of air bed mattresses is that they can conform right around the shape of your body. This creates a comfortable cradle that lends support just where it's needed. This also is very helpful in reducing the uncomfortable pressure points that are part of the normal experience when sleeping on standard mattress beds.

These pressure points can interfere with the natural alignment of your spine at night. Mattress beds that are too firm will not allow for the natural and essential curvature of the spine. At the same time, a mattress that is to soft does not provide proper support either.

This can cause abnormal positioning of the spine which create bends, nooks and crooks that ultimately lead to pain. Therefore, if you find yourself waking up on a regular basis with persistent back pain, you would do well to consider switching to an adjustable air bed.

If your current mattress does not give your back the right support, you are setting yourself up for the development of chronic lower back pain. Back pain is a leading cause of reduced productivity in the workplace, missed days of work and the chronic use of pain relieving medications. Rather than deal with these types of consequences, a simpler solution would be to address the root cause of the problem and ultimately improve your sleeping conditions with an air bed.

You should also keep in mind that over the course of your life, your body goes through many changes. The natural aging process and various stresses and injuries that are inflicted upon it, will very likely require a different level of firmness in a mattress.

With traditional coil spring mattress beds, this would mean that you would need to purchase a new mattress, but with an air bed, it is simply a matter of making a firmness adjustment to your air bed mattress to match your changing needs.

On the market today, you can find a large number of choices in air bed mattresses and you will almost certainly find the right inflatable air bed to meet your needs and your budget. Depending on the quality of the material and various options you can choose from, you can expect to pay anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars up to a few thousand dollars.

No matter the kind you choose, you will enjoy a more restful sleep and have better support than you had with your traditional mattress.

Is An Adjustable Air Bed Comfortable?

An adjustable air bed is no longer just a temporary sleeping arrangement for guests staying over. These types of beds are simply a mattress that contains air bladders instead of coil springs. Each side of the bed has the ability to adjust to the support needs of the person sleeping on it. Therefore, each sleeping partner can adjust to his or her specific needs. This is especially important for the person with a back problem that needs to adjust the air support chambers to provide just the right amount of back support and firmness in the bed without disturbing their partner.

An adjustable air bed has the ability to mold and shape to the contour of a person sleeping. Originally designed for hospitals where the need for added support and not as many pressure points was very important to the patients comfort and healing. It was only a matter of time before these beds were made available to the public.

The mattresses are very comfortable due to the ability to spread the weight of the body and the actual contacts points on the mattress in a much more even fashion. People who suffer from allergies find that an adjustable air bed is a good alternative because it is not a breeding ground for dust mites. A coil spring mattress can hold as many as five million dust mites and is the largest area of concentration of these critters in a household.

An adjustable air bed offers more flexibility to the individual because of the ability to fine tune the settings on a nightly basis. The problem with a coil spring mattress is that you cannot make any changes to the settings because there is none. Many people find that they have uncomfortable pressure points when sleeping. As we get older, the more aches and pains we experience. This is likely why the older generation has embraced the change from regular beds over the last several years.

Pressure points also cause problems with the natural alignment of your spine during sleep. If you have a mattress that is too hard it does not allow for the natural curves of the spine. If you sleep on a mattress that is too soft it will also not provide the proper support your spine needs as well. An adjustable air bed will alleviate this problem of sleeping on a mattress that is either too hard or too soft.

There are a number of different adjustable air bed mattresses available on the market today. Do your research and if possible test them out before making your purchase. Your back will thank you for making the change from a traditional coil spring mattress.

Mattresses - Finding the Perfect Mattress for Your Bed

A good night's sleep owes much to the mattress. This flat pad or mat is usually placed on the floor or on top of a bed (or metal spring foundation). Historically, a variety of natural materials were used as filling (straw or feathers) for the mattress. But today, mattresses usually have an innerspring core or synthetic materials like latex, viscoelastic or polyurethane. They can also be filled with air or water.

It is recommended that you replace your mattress after every 10 to 13 years. Spring bases require replacement every 12 to 13 years, while slat bases require replacement every once every ten years. For hygienic purposes, however, it is wise to replace any mattress once every 10 years, regardless of what base type it is. Peaks, dips, or lumps in your mattress from day-to-day use might also warrant mattress replacement if you frequently wake up feeling stiff or have regular backaches. As you grow older your body changes and with that your needs. An older body will better appreciate a softer, but still firm, mattress to protect the pressure points. Mattresses that are too soft will also create difficulties for older persons when getting out of bed.

When shopping for a mattress, it is important to go for superior quality. Be clear whether you want a soft, medium or hard mattress. Get the bed size correct and make sure any mattress you buy has at least a 10-year warranty. A soft mattress will allow your body to sink in and it has less dense inner foam core with more fill around the foam core. A medium mattress will allow your body to sink in but also offer a good amount of support. It will have more dense foam core and less fill around the foam. On the other hand, a firm mattress will allow for complete body support with very little fill between the foam core and the mattress cover.

A common innerspring mattress consists of three components: the spring core, the foundation and the upholstery layers. The core of the mattress supports the sleeper's body. Modern spring mattress cores, often called "innersprings" are made up of steel coils. The foundation can be of box springs, wood or a combination of wood and steel. Box springs have a rigid frame with extra-heavy springs (soft and could sag). Sometimes manufacturers put high-density block foam under the coils for a firmer foundation. Wood foundations are firm and called zero deflection units in the industry since these consist of seven or eight support slats that offer firmness and stability. The upholstery layer is also known as the comfort layer as it provides cushioning and comfort.

Air beds or air mattresses use air chambers instead of springs for support. Price ranges vary from very affordable to high-end. Some air beds can even adjust the firmness of the mattress. Mattresses made of latex (natural rubber) are very expensive and also need an expensive flexible-slat base. But a pure latex mattress can be expected to last 20 to 25 years. A latex mattress may be a good option for allergy sufferers because they're less likely to harbor mould and dust mites. The mattress doesn't wobble (reducing partner disturbance) as well. A latex overlay with a firm spring mattress is a good, economical option.

But the buzzword in mattresses today is memory foam mattress or viscoelastic. Viscoelastic foam was developed by NASA almost 30 years ago, but it is just beginning to work its way into the mattress market today. Made from polyurethane it is less 'springy' and slower to recover, hence called 'memory foam,' as it 'remembers' your shape for a while after you've moved. So a viscoelastic mattress (that has a layer of viscoelastic attached to another material, usually polyurethane foam) or viscoelastic overlays (to put on your present mattress) often make for a very comfortable bed with minimum partner disturbance. Some, however, feel it's like 'sleeping on wet or hard sand'. But viscoelastic mattresses are often used in some hospitals and nursing homes to help prevent pressure ulcers caused by lying in the same position for a long time.

Slat System Platform Beds And Memory Foam Mattresses - How To Make Them Work Together

Many of today's latex and foam mattresses require special foundations in order to work with certain bed systems. The most popular of these mattresses are latex or memory foam mattresses. Often times the manufacturers of these mattresses tell you that you'll void the warranty if you don't use proper support for their mattresses. This can make shopping for a new bed somewhat challenging at times but there are things you can do to make it easier in finding the bed you like and making it work with your memory foam mattress. In this article we'll look at some of the many alternatives that exist that can help you in providing the proper support for your mattress and at the same time give you a bed that is both pleasing to look at and functional with modern mattresses.

A large majority of platform beds use a system of slats which make up the foundation of the bed system. This works well with mattresses that use a lot of batting be it cotton or cotton polyester as this helps to promote air flow. This in turn helps to keep moisture from collecting in the batting and improves the life of the mattress. However slat systems don't work so well with brands of mattresses which require a solid foundation so you'll need to make some minor modifications to use your existing bed or beds you're thinking about purchasing to make it work.

One option would be to use a ¼" sheet of plyboard over the existing set of slats. This covers the gaps between the slats and the slats beneath the plyboard will have trouble supporting the plyboard. The thin nature of ¼" should also help to hide it between the mattress and slats so that it isn't visible. It's best to measure the inside length and width of your bedframe where the mattress rests and subtract 1-2" from each dimension to be sure that the piece of plyboard you are cutting will fit correctly over the slats and won't hang over any edges. If you're worried about movement you can find non-slip material in most major hardware stores and home stores. It's the same material used in kitchen cabinets and under rugs to keep things from moving around.

Another option you can do is purchase a second set of slats. This option would give you maximum strength and support for almost any mattress and the extra set of slats can be placed in the gaps between the existing gaps to effectively fill in the foundation to be more solid. Because many slats systems are banded this may require you to purchase for a second set of slats that are unbanded which will allow you to place the slats more independently of each other between the slat system already in place.

In this article we've looked for ways to make existing platform bed systems comply with warranty requirements of mattresses which require a solid foundation. A few of the ideas presented here are just some of the many ways you can modify your existing bed system to work with your latex or memory foam mattress. One suggestion we presented here was using a ¼" of plyboard over existing slats to help form a solid foundation without gaps for your mattress. The other idea was to use a second set of slats and place them in between the existing slat system to fill in the gaps and make the foundation more solid. Always check with your mattress manufacturer to see what the warranty requirements are for your mattress to make sure that your bed's foundation will work with the type of mattress you are using. The ideas presented in this article will hopefully give you an excellent starting point in converting your existing bed system into one that will work with your new foam mattress.

Air Mattress Prices

The prices of air mattresses range from around $50 to as much as $1200, depending upon the size, quality and comfort of the mattress you choose. The cheaper air mattresses may not have the same styling and comfort as a premium air mattress, and it may not come with a 30-day exchange or refund option. So, depending upon the type of mattress you choose, the pricing will vary accordingly.

The cheaper ones sell for $50 to $100. They may not come with a pump, which makes blowing them up extremely difficult. It is recommended that if the mattress does not come with a pump that you go out and buy one. They are reasonably priced, and you will need it! Perhaps you own another air mattress that did come with a pump. Less expensive air mattresses come with a nylon lining. Some may have a quilted or fleece lining, but you will pay closer to $100 for those.

The next step up in air mattresses is the mid range from over $100, up to around $300. These mid range mattresses come with a pump and have better lining like fleece. Some are equipped with a heating control system, which is adjustable and can provide heat to all night long. Of course these features add to the price.

The higher priced air mattresses are between $300 and $1200. These mattresses are very plush compared to the less expensive ones and have a variety of features. Most come with an electric pump have built in pillow tops and rich fleece lining. They are extremely comfortable and offer an internal heating system. The high-end air mattresses all come with a trial option and a warranty of some type. Sizes of the mattresses determine the prices. The smaller or single mattresses are, of course, cheaper as compared to queen size for a king size mattress.

Simmons Luxaire Mattress - A Buyer's Guide

For couples who want a mattress with motion separation but have individual support requirements, the Simmons Luxaire Mattress might just be the answer to a good night's sleep.

Many couples loose sleep because of each others tossing and turning during the night. Mattress manufacturers have come up with various types of mattresses that offer motion separation, so that the movement of one partner does not disturb the sleep of the other. The types of mattresses offered to consumers have ranged from water mattresses, to pocket coil springs mattresses, to memory foam mattresses. Indeed, Simmons has produced all three types of these mattresses; the Simmons Natural Spring, the Simmons Beautyrest, and the Simmons Beautyrest with memory foam, respectably. And, whilst all of these mattress types do offer some degree of motion separation, the one thing they don't offer is the degree of support offered to each partner.

It is not unusual for one partner to be much heavier, by comparison, than the other, which means that each sleeper requires a different degree of support from the mattress they're sleeping on. Conventional mattresses have been unable to offer motion separation whilst at the same time, offer the individual support for the sleeper. This is where the Simmons Luxaire Mattress comes into its own.

The Simmons Beautyrest Luxaire Mattress, unlike conventional mattresses, has been designed to offer different comfort levels for both sides of the bed. The Luxaire mattress is an air mattress, where the left and right sides of the dual-chamber air mattress inflate and deflate separately with hand controls, so both sleepers can enjoy personal comfort without disrupting the other's sleep. This means that both sleepers can adjust the support to their own, individual requirements.

Not only, does the Simmons Beautyrest Luxaire mattress, allow each sleeper to adjust the comfort to their individual needs, the Luxaire mattress also comes with two controls - so you don't have to wrestle with each other.

The Simmons Luxaire mattress comes with the following features:

1. Dual-chamber airbed with heavy-duty rubber air chambers – for personalized, adjustable comfort.

2. Ergonomic controls – backlit LEDs reflect firmness levels. Auto-fill and memory features.

3. The mattress cover is a diamond-quilted, floral damask Lyocell , which make the mattress durable, soft and breathable.

4. The Simmons Luxaire comes with solid wood foundation and quilted fabric – there is a pouch on each side for hand controls.

5. Euro-top comfort layer – 2" tri-zoned memory foam is denser in the center, which is where you need the most support. 6. Visco-elastic memory foam – conforms to the exact shpre of your body, thus alleviating pressure point - especially good for those who suffer back problems.

7. StayPure satin comfort sleeve – zippered for easy removal and cleaning.

8. Protective, 6-1/2" pre-assembled foam-based tray, with a reinforced center and vinyl encased barrier, which prevents moisture from reaching the foam.

9. Whisper-quiet air compressor – designed for quicker response time and quiet inflation/deflation.

10. Simmons will set-up the new mattress and foundation and takes away your old one.

11. UL listed computerized air compressor.

It's an expensive mattress, but it does deliver the support each partner's wants and should last a lifetime. It's one of the best mattresses available for couples. With the Simmons Beautyrest Luxaire mattress two beds become one.

The Benefits of Air Mattresses

Given the amount of time that we spend sleeping -- or trying to sleep -- it only makes sense to make our beds as comfortable as possible. Today, we have many choices in mattresses, from pillow-top to firm. But what happens if your mattress preferences change from day to day? Maybe an ultra-firm mattress works for you sometimes, but other times you prefer a softer bed. For changeable comfort, an air mattress just might be your best bet.

Air mattresses are equipped with inflatable, adjustable chambers. One such air mattress, the Sleep Number bed by Select Comfort, comes with two separate air chambers. A numbered remote dial controls each air chamber. The customer adjusts the mattress to the desired firmness -- or softness -- with the touch of a button. Since there are two chambers, each side of the bed can be controlled independently. This is ideal for partners with different mattress preferences.

LoungAir is offering a unique air mattress that converts to a lounge, chair, or recliner. Another type of air mattress is the low-cost, foldable variety. These inflatable mattresses are great for spare bedrooms, guest rooms, slumber parties, and even camping trips. Most of these air mattresses are simply put on the floor. These mattresses can be found at bedding stores such as Linens N Things and Bed, Bath & Beyond. They can also be found at department stores. At the time of this writing, WalMart was offering a two-position air mattress on a frame for $34. Some outdoor and camping supplies stores also sell air mattresses, as well as many online stores.

One company, however, created a more comfortable alternative to the on-the-floor air mattresses. The Raised AeroBed, by Aero Products International, Inc., is an inflatable bed that stands about two feet high. This type of air mattress can be inflated with a small electric pump.

The Uses of Air Beds

Did you know that using poor quality mattresses is one of the major causes of back pain? An air bed is the answer to this problem.

Sleeping in a bed that is uncomfortable equates to sleeping in the wrong position the whole night. To solve this problem, turn over or flip your mattress every now and then. Replace your mattress if it is already 12 to 15 years old. You might want to consider other alternatives to traditional spring beds.

Air beds are better since you can adjust their firmness. They conform to your shape naturally; they help maintain the proper alignment of your spine during sleep. These beds are quite expensive and can even go for as much as $1,000.

A less expensive alternative to air beds is the air mattress. A lot come with dual controls that are capable of adjusting the bed?s firmness.

Please take note of these other considerations when buying air beds:

First, the pump should be of high quality. The silent pump needs more maintenance since flap valves and other parts easily break down. Since there is no need to constantly adjust the bed, noise will not be much of an issue. It is important to choose a pump that only has a few parts that are moving. There should be an audible sound when in use.

Second, you should look for durable side rails in the design of the air bed. Choose one that is padded with thick foam 0n the perimeter so that the edges are sturdy.

Third, remember that a nice layer of memory foam along the top of the air bed is even better than an ordinary pillow top. Aside from being more comfortable, it proves to be more effective in spreading points of pressure. It is more durable than conventional pillow tops. Although there are pillow tops that have additional fixtures like wool that can regulate your sleep temperature. It can make you warm during winter and cool during summer.

So while shopping around for air beds, keep these guidelines in mind.

Camping Air Bed Brings Comforts Of Home To Campgrounds

Something about the outdoor life grabs people and calls them to come out to the wild to enjoy the wondrous beauty of nature that simply cannot be discovered unless you get far outside the cities and towns. There are many couples who love to share their passion for the out of doors.

However, more of these couples might get out and "away from it all" more often, if they could enjoy a restful night of sleep too. This is where the camping air bed can come in to save the day.

This kind of camping bed is a significant upgrade in comfort for the campsite. When a couple is out hiking or camping they no longer have to end each day sleeping on a separate camping air mattress, but can now enjoy the luxury of a king size or queen size product that is especially designed for the outdoor-minded couple. This helps to bring an additional element of togetherness and comfort while under the stars and most couples report sleeping much better in their king or queen size air bed than they ever experienced on their twin air mattress.

Sometimes, it is the wife of the outdoor minded man, who will be less than enthusiastic about planning another outdoor excursion. Clearly the ladies prefer having more of the comforts of home and are not fans roughing-it, no matter how much they love getting out into nature. However, with the assurance of a comfortable night's sleep, snuggled securing with their husband, they tend to be more willing to pitch a tent at the campground or lakeside retreat.

A great benefit of the camping air bed is that most of them are much higher off of the ground than the traditional camping air mattress. For the people who might have aching backs and knees and who would rather not attempt getting up from a mattress at ground level, they will be happy to know that the camping queen air mattress is much easier to maneuver. In fact, it is very much like getting up out of a standard bed.

For those who are not all that excited about getting into sleeping bags that have seen too many seasons outside or stuffed in the corner of the garage, most of these camping air beds also can be used with standard bedding, making you feel even more like you are at home.

Sometimes children have some fears about staying out in the woods, or being very close to the ground, or both. In this case, a camp bed that is off the ground, like the beds they are used to at home, can make it easier for them to get used to their outback surroundings and sleep better. And, everyone knows that the better rested the kids are on during an adventure, the better things will go overall.

There is truly a wide variety of camping air bed models that are now available from which to choose. There are king, full and queen size air bed models and even a style that will convert into a couch during the day. With some time to scope out your options and some planning, your next venture into the wild might have you feeling right at home and more comfortable than ever.

Comfortaire Air Bed - Is It Better Than Sleep Number?

Almost everyone has heard of the Sleep Number (Select Comfort) Bed.

But fewer people, it seems, have heard of Comfortaire.

The Comfortaire bed is just like the Sleep Number bed in many ways. They both use air as the main supporting feature - instead of innersprings, water, memory foam, etc. And they both have adjustable firmness at the push of a button. More air in the mattress means more firmness, and vice versa.

Is Comfortaire better, worse or the same as Sleep Number?

To find this answer, among many others, I recently spent at least 250 hours going through almost 50 online forums, message boards, consumer websites, etc. gathering data from at least 1,600 people on what they think of their mattresses. Below are some of my findings on Sleep Number and Comfortaire.

Which is more comfortable?

Both beds rate highly in regard to comfort compared to other mattresses, according to my research. However, 90% of Comfortaire owners find their bed comfortable, while 70% of Sleep Number owners find their bed comfortable.

Which is more affordable?

Prices for the Sleep Number bed range generally from under $1,000 to nearly $5,000. Prices for Comfortaire beds are usually less, and range from under $1,000 to over $4,000.

Which seems to have better quality?

According to my research, about 8% of both Sleep Number and Comfortaire owners said that they view their bed as being of poor quality. However, 4% of Sleep Number owners said that they think their bed is good quality, while 17% of Comfortaire owners said they think their bed is good quality.

So what's the bottom line?

While the Sleep Number (Select Comfort) bed has many satisfied customers, Comfortaire seems to currently beat Sleep Number in some important ways, according to my research.

Cheap Air Mattresses

There are many air mattresses available on the market today. Even for the low budget or conservative buyer there are cheap air mattresses available.

Most cheap mattresses come without a pump that has to be purchased separately. Also pillow covers are not included nor are bed sheets. Most cheap air mattresses are 'no-frills' purchases that require additional accessories to make them comfortable and easy to use.

The cheap air mattresses are made of nylon and are waterproof, but they do not have a quilted or a fleece cover or duvet. They do have indentations on the sides to accommodate fitted sheets. Most are quite durable, as they are made with dual chambers, and they are single sided. The size of the mattresses also has an effect on the pricing. The single mattress cost less as compared to the king sized.

The point of purchase also affects the pricing of the mattresses. Retailers sell at a higher price, as compared to factory outlet stores or even company showrooms. To get the cheapest price possible go to any outlet during their annual sale or clearance. Catalogues also offer discounted prices, as do some online stores. When ordering online or by catalogues just make sure you check the shipping and handling charges.

Even low budget buyers have a wide variety of cheap air mattresses to choose from. Most low end producers promise a lot of features and quality, but it best to read testimonials and check ratings on websites before deciding on which cheap air mattress to buy.

Sleep Great With A Tempurpedic Mattress

As to which is the best type of bed and mattress for you, well, that all depends on your age, health, marital status, sleep habits and a lot of other factors. Just make sure you have the exact dimensions of your bed before you go mattress shopping, since bed manufacturers sometimes don´t follow the standard bed sizes exactly.

The basis of any bed is still the mattress and frame, which only vary outwardly in terms of the sizes listed above. A loft bunk bed is technically defined as a bunk bed in which the top of the mattress is more than three feet from the floor. Among the more commonly found characteristics of contemporary platform beds are sleek, straight lines; gently swooping curves; solid, easily discernible finishes and colors; simple, tasteful flourishes and other artistic flairs; the use of high-tech foam as a mattress material; and other characteristics.

Waterbeds are a very popular bedroom option because they provide such a gorgeous sleep and total rest for the entire slumber. However, once you have had a good nights sleep in the waterbed, you won't give the maintenance a second thought.

Prominent adjustable bed manufacturers include Craftmatic, Sleep Comfort, Sealy, Tempur Pedic, and Spring Air. They may be also used by those who are temporarily or permanently bed-ridden to make them sleep more comfortably. Those who have medical conditions that require them to sleep in certain positions generally use adjustable beds.

A word of caution: never compromise quality with cost as the risks involved far outweigh the benefit of having saved a few extra dollars. Perhaps one good tip would be to buy a good quality bunk bed, which can be separated into two twin beds. One should consider the quality of iron when purchasing a wrought iron bed.

The newer and increasingly popular types of bed are usually more traditional in design and are often made from high quality pine. Just because bunk beds look great does not mean that they will be safe and secure and built with quality materials and craftsmanship. Make sure the bunk bed is made of strong, quality materials. A quality bunk bed will have no trouble in supporting you.

You can drastically reduce most sleeping problems with a good quality memory foam mattress, and even more so with an adjustable bed armed with a latex foam mattress or visco-elastic foam mattress. These adjustable beds also come with luxury foam mattresses. There are also different luxury foam mattresses for these adjustable beds.

There are more types of beds and mattresses than Carter has liver pills. Standard or pillow-top mattresses are used, and can be of any size from twin to king. It has to be an adjustable bed mattress because adjustable bed mattresses are specially designed to be flexible and contour to your body, fitting like a glove and easing stress of your spinal alignment.

Just as in adjustable bed prices, adjustable bed mattresses come in a multitude of different materials, sizes and prices. If you need a specific size four poster bed, it is possible to get the beds in any size and have the mattresses custom made as well.

Air beds are generally far cheaper than regular mattresses, and in many cases they are about as comfortable. Flat mattresses provide lesser comfort compared to sleeping inclined which is offered by adjustable beds. The adjustable beds with the new mattresses helps to ease lower back pain by eliminating the pressure points and providing the support you need to get good nights sleep.

Air Beds Provide Real Comfort, Convenience

For generations, air mattresses have been thought of in basically two ways. Either they were something you would take along to survive your camping trip or were something you would drag out when your overnight guests outnumbered the real mattresses in the house. But in recent years, these inflatable platforms have been elevated to the status of air beds.

That one point has probably been the biggest issue over the years with the old fashioned mattresses. Even with a brand new one, it was common to awaken in the morning with one or more body parts languishing on the floor instead of being supported by a nice cushion of air, as intended.

This meant either stiffness and sore spots in the morning or waking up every few hours to infuse more air into the camping air mattress to keep it from sagging. Fortunately, those that are available today have overcome this particular problem.

Air beds are often thought of as an upgraded version of the well-know inflatable air mattress that people use for camping trips. But, the new ones are much more than that and are intended to be used inside of the house. They are designed to deliver a significant improvement over the old air mattresses in terms of increased comfort.

Most basic inflatable air mattress camping-style beds are made of plastic or vinyl, which is not the most comfortable material to sleep on, even with a sheet over it. The new and improved products, however, usually have a nice material on the top which helps to make them more comfortable and means that you are not sweating and sticking to the plastic throughout the night.

These beds of air are made up mostly of a heavy vinyl or plastic, except for the top covering. This allows them to be deflated and stored, just like the air mattress camping versions you remember. This gives them the advantage of being storable until they are needed for company.

And, if you decide you like them enough, they are now of high enough quality that you can use them as your primary bed. Imagine the next time you move. Instead of breaking your back trying to maneuver that heavy and awkward traditional mattress down a flight or two of stairs, you simply deflate your bed, fold it up, slide it in it's case and carry it to the moving truck single-handedly. That scenario alone is enough to make some people make the switch without thinking much more about it.

But portability and ease of storage are only two reasons why they are becoming so very popular. One of the main reasons why people are trading in their traditional bed mattresses is that they are so comfortable. Today's deluxe ones can be adjusted for firmness so that you can make your bed conform to the needs of your body rather than the other way around.

The Select Comfort air bed is one of the more popular air mattress bed manufacturers. They offer their Sleep Number Air Beds which incorporates special air chambers for an additional cushion of gentle support.

Their beds can easily be adjusted at the touch of a button for personal firmness level, thus delivering the best comfort possible. In addition, each side can be controlled separately so that couples no longer have to compromise about mattress firmness, but can adjust their own side independently.

What Extra Long Bed Sizes Are Available For Taller People?

Having worked in retail for many years I came to a truthful realization that people come in all different heights and sizes and this can really impact the type of furniture that is available for them. Something many sales people can take for granted. The challenge always is finding manufacturers who will make custom sizes that can be of benefit to the customer. This article hopes to provide some options available in bedroom furniture that are available for folks shopping that are over 6' tall and are just having a rough time finding that bed that fits.

Many of us may have a teenager or spouse who are rather tall. Buying furniture can be tough as most furniture manufacturers stick to conventional sizes rather than making custom sizes. There was one such instance in a store that I worked in where a rather tall gentleman about 6' 6" tall was just having an awful time trying to find furniture that would fit him. I remember his frustration not towards me but just in general about how difficult it was to find furniture that would fit. We spent a good hour going through the different pieces of furniture in the showroom. The store I worked in at the time didn't offer XL sizes or custom sizes in the beds or furniture and the customer thanked me for showing him around and understandably moved on in his search for furniture.

I remember that day well and came to a realization that many furniture manufacturers were not taking every customer into consideration when designing their furniture. Over time though these manufacturers began to catch on and living room furniture began being offered with adjustable headrests, dining room furniture would often be featured or available in high back chairs and the bedding industry began developing a series of sizes that could be implemented into bedroom furniture.

The three extra long sizes that are most used today in bedroom furniture and are considered somewhat standard when it comes to extra long are Twin XL 39"x 80", Full XL 54" x 80" and California King 72"x 85". The reason twin extra long and full extra long beds became so popular is that they were a very good size for growing teenagers who were too tall for standard twin or full size beds. Twin & Full extra long beds are 80" long or 6' 8" long. Queen size would have been just too wide for these young adult's rooms just like king sizes which would have taken up the entire room or dorm. XL sizes made a lot of sense in that they could save valuable wall space as the width stays the same but the length of the bed would be long enough to help make the bed more comfortable.

California king beds could be considered extra long beds for adults as they are 85" long or a little over 7' long. These are less wide than standard king beds and width-wise fall in between a queen and king bed. The length however is great for adults up to 7' tall and this is what makes them a great alternative to shorter length beds. California king is a special size that not all manufacturers make but surprisingly more of these beds are becoming available.

In this article we've taken a look at some alternative sizes of beds that are available for taller teenagers and adults who have had trouble finding beds that fit and are comfortable for normal sleeping. For teenagers or young adults Twin XL and Full XL beds are available which will offer better bed length than their standard counterparts but won't add additional width which can be in short supply in some dorms and smaller bedrooms. California King is considered an extra long size for adults and measures just over 7' long. If you have family or friends who are tall and just can't find a standard size bed that fits, try suggesting the extra long beds mentioned in this article and I'm sure you'll be assisting them in finding that good nights sleep.

The Unique Benefits of Medical Adjustable Beds

With more medical advantages, an adjustable bed finds more functions in a hospital or a nursing home. It provides relief to people who are bed-ridden or those who have to stay in bed for long hours and can be adjusted either manually or electrically.

There are several health benefits from adjustable beds. Adjustable beds ease swelling of the legs and ease back pain. They relieve soreness of the body and soothe neck and shoulder tension. They also offset acid reflux and overnight heartburn. They provide relief for certain parts of the body such as the neck, spine and knees. Adjustable beds are especially useful for people who have degenerative spondylolisthesis, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis and other diseases. They are also ideal for people who have just had surgery. Adjustable beds also help in getting in and out of bed; relieving the heart muscle, thus making breathing easier; reliving the stomach muscles and aiding in proper digestion; passive back stretching, and more. Some adjustable beds also have built-in massaging motors in automatic and manual modes.

Medical adjustable beds can also designed to suit the exact requirements of the user. They can be designed to suit the condition of the patient and the exact position the body has to rest on the bed. The bed can also be fitted with a massage system and various other options. Medical adjustable beds are available in twin, queen, king or single sizes and the firmness can also be adjusted as per requirements. They can also be operated electronically by the user and without an attendant.

Medical adjustable beds are particularly useful for disabled, elderly and invalid users, regardless of whether the handicap is permanent or temporary. Their very lightweight control can adjust the head, foot motors, as well as the massaging unit, all simultaneously.

The main components of a medical adjustable bed are: the vertical lifter, the motors, battery backup, retractable cot sides, optional cot side protectors, base cut-outs, locking castors, reflex multi-zone mattress, and therapeutic massage system.

Adjustable beds come in various guises like the pocket spring mattress or the modern foam mattresses. They are also available with the option of screw-in or fixed legs. Fixed-leg beds are more suitable for nursing, allowing positioning the feet of various medical apparatus under the bed.

Adjustable Beds - Now This Will Put You To Sleep

Somewhere it is written that people will spend one-third of their life in bed. I don't really know that to be true. I think that number comes from the theory that people need 8 hours sleep a day; and there are 24 hours in a day and 8 is one-third of 24. People rarely do things by the numbers. This theory seems to discount a lot of factors that could throw those numbers into question. But the one thing that isn't in question is that we do need sleep. Sleep is more than just the period between work and not working. Sleep relaxes us, it rejuvenates our bodies. All people are different, so everyone doesn't need the same amount of sleep to get through the day.

How do we get the sleep that we need? For those of us that don't fall asleep on the couch, the bed is usually the best option. Beds come in all different shapes and sizes. Some beds are soft, others are firm, it depends on individual taste. Beds of today usually consist of a mattress on top of a box spring. This is a big improvement over some of the earliest beds that were created, many of which were nothing more than piles of straw. Beds can be decorated with all different kinds of pillows and bed spreads, it all depends on the individual.

Beds, like most everything, have made advances through the years. There are different types of beds. There is the foam bed, air bed, waterbed and even an adjustable bed. The adjustable bed is simply a bed that can be adjusted into different positions. Probably the first time most of us came into contact with an adjustable bed, was in the hospital. The adjustable bed isn't really new, it's been around since the 60s. The adjustable bed appears to be light years ahead of the standard bed and I assume the price is too, which explains why the hospital was the most likely place to see one.

The adjustable bed has proven to give even more benefits to the human body then the standard bed. For people with certain types of back problems, the adjustable bed has allowed them to sleep more comfortable. The bed can be adjusted to reduce pressure on the spine and thus relieving pressure on the entire body. On a lighter note, the adjustable bed also makes it a lot easier to watch TV in bed.

With the technical advancements in the adjustable bed and the rise in individual income; the adjustable bed isn't just for hospitals anymore. Lots of people have purchased adjustable beds for their homes. Even television has gotten into the act, with infomercials singing the praises of owning an adjustable bed. The adjustable bed seems to be the new way to sleep, read and relax in bed. I guess only time will tell if the adjustable bed will become a staple in our lives, or will it disappear like so many other creations that we once thought we couldn't live without.

Intex Airbed Received Dubious Reviews

Many people love to entertain out of town guests for a couple days, giving them a chance to catch up and relax without having to worry so much about time constraints. But, not everyone has a spare bed to accommodate their visitors. This is the perfect scenario, depicting why having an Intex Airbed can be particularly handy.

The are a number of different Intex models on the market and the newest ones have some advanced features that the earlier models did not have. As with many other inflatable air mattress styles that are available, Intex has also recently introduced a model that has a built in air pump.

According to some owners of the Intex Airbed, the inclusion of an air pump as part of the inflatable bed is a much needed improvement. One reviewer who owned an Intex inflatable mattress wrote that she found that it is very stable and comfortable and she gave it high marks for not losing air as so many other similar products are known to do.

Her biggest complaint in the review that she posted, was that the inflatable one was extremely difficult to inflate. The reviewer goes on to explain that the "Intex Double Quick Air Pump" which came with the queen size air bed was anything but quick.

The manual pump failed to inflate the mattress to any significant degree after fifteen minutes of pumping. She followed the instructions as provided, which stated the manual pump was designed to pump air into the mattress during both the up and down stokes.

After more than an hour of experimenting they discovered the only way to get the pump working was to do half strokes which succeeded in getting the air into the mattress, but was a very tiring ordeal.

She concluded that the only way she would make a purchase of another Intex Airbed would be if she could get one of the newer self-inflating models. It should be noted that this particular reviewer was describing her experience with the Intex Queen Downy Airbed model.

Other reviewers have posted similar complaints about the Intex Airbed, but at the same time there are many positive comments about the quality of the inflatable mattress material that was used. It also seems that the dual wave beam construction of the bed made it more stable and comfortable, especially when used by two people.

This particular product also has a flocked air bed top, comfort feature. The material has a similar feel to velour and it covers the top side of the mattress bed. This layer helps to reduce sweating which is a common problem with many plastic and vinyl mattress beds. Another benefit of this flocked top is that the rayon becomes a non-slip surface which helps to keep the sheets in place.

Another reviewer who purchased the Intex Recreation Double Airbed did not have the same issue with inflating his Intex Airbed, as the above reviewer did. However, the problem he encountered was that the inflatable one seeped air throughout the night, leaving him with body parts resting mainly on the floor by morning and with an aching back.

His final comment was that product would be the perfect air bed to offer those out of town guests who you don't want staying for any extended period of time.

Platform Beds

Platform beds, as the name suggests, are beds that are supported by a thin or narrow strip of wood or any other material. These beds have no head or footboard, which a traditional bed contains. Platform beds are preferred by people for their firm sleeping surfaces. They are positioned lower to the ground and serve as a storage space for small houses. Usually platform beds rest on a rectangular surface, but they sometimes have small legs at the four corners.

Unlike a traditional bed that has a spring mattress, a platform bed’s thin surface holds a thin mattress and sits low to the ground. The cost of a thin mattress is much less than that of a spring mattress, and bedding is minimal saving the buyer even more money. They are usually made of hard and durable wood and appeal to those who want to give their bedroom a minimalist look. The beds have a sleek look and are a self-contained unit. One can build a wide plank around the bed to use as a bench or a stand. Such beds are more common in eastern countries as they emulate an oriental look. One can also construct a headboard to function as a shelf for a lamp, books or other items.

The selection of beds for your personal space can be overwhelming sometimes. When you have a small room platform beds are an ideal solution. The space under the platform can probably store your bedding and pillows. The beds are extremely comfortable, and their simple look lends an elegant charm to the room.

Camping Air Mattress

There are various outdoor camping air mattresses available in the market today. It depends on what kind of camping you are doing. If you're sleeping in a cottage on a cot and just need extra support, a blow-up air mattress will do. However, if you're sleeping in a tent, you might want more padding, so to speak.

Some of them are used with built in air pumps, have velour tops and removable padded surface for comfort. Camping air mattresses have become an essential item for camping because they allow weary campers to get a good night's sleep in the great outdoors. The best thing about camping air mattresses is that they are all made portable and fairly light. They can be easily folded or rolled in a compact size so that they can easily fit into your vehicle. The most popular, practical and convenient choice among campers is the simpler inflatable air mattresses that are really light and easily inflated manually.

Some things to take into consideration when you are buying an air mattress for camping are to make sure that if you are camping in a tent, the air mattress will fit inside. There are specially designed air mattresses made for small tents. Also, if more than one person is camping and sleeping in one tent, get a mattress that will fit the number of people sleeping in the tent. It is more comfortable that way. Don't skimp on what you spend for a camping air mattress. It's bad enough you're sleeping outside on the ground ? you might as well have something that is comfortable and durable.

It may also relay testimonials to you that people who purchased the air mattress give as to the greatness of the product. You'll be given the price and methods of payments accepted. Again you can pay by credit or debit card, or you can make payment on delivery. This too is a convenient way of shopping, and you have the advantage of seeing the actual product and how it is used. Of course one of the most popular ways is to a shop or showroom that sells air mattresses. Here you can actually touch and feel the air mattress, try it for comfort and size, check the options available and once purchase it on the spot.

Foam Mattress Pads For A Better Night's Sleep

Foam mattress pads are perfect for providing a temporary solution to a problem. You know you need a new mattress, but it's just not in the family budget right now. Yet you just can't sleep with springs poking you in the back or a big sway in the middle of the bed. Of course without proper sleep you are certainly not at your best and at times, are almost non-functional. Your co-workers notice you yawning and maybe even nodding during the day. Yes a lack of sleep is a serious problem, and a foam mattress pad could be the answer to that problem.

The good news is that these pads are available just about anywhere beds are sold and certainly there is a huge selection online. Just pick one out that matches the size of your bed and you're good to go. They're simple to use. If you can make your bed (and assuming you don't still live with your mother you probably can) then you can use a pad. It just sits on top of your current mattress and is held firmly in place by your fitted sheet. What could be easier?

More difficult perhaps is choosing the right foam mattress pad. There are many types available. The egg crate pad has been popular for a long time and is your least expensive option. You would think that with those ridges it would be uncomfortable but it is not. And it's certainly more comfortable than sleeping on your old mattress that needs to be replaced anyway. These are also some of the least expensive if your budget is really tight.

More expensive (but not nearly as costly as a new mattress) is the memory foam pad. By now you've probably heard about how memory foam works. These pads will conform to your body shape and add extra support where you need it. When the budget permits, we recommend going with a memory foam mattress, but for now, the pad will do. As a side note, you should also look into memory foam pillows to go with your new pad.

There are however some drawbacks to foam mattress pads. For starters, they are almost impossible to wash. Water will damage the pads and make them almost unusable. If the pad gets too dirty, your best bet is to simply replace it. But chances are that won't happen until you're ready to get that new mattress we've been talking about.

Just to be safe you can fit a plastic sheet over the mattress, but you'll just have to try this for yourself. For some the plastic will make it hard to sleep since it can make noise whenever you roll over. If it keeps you from sleeping then you're defeating the purpose of getting a foam mattress pad.

One final thought, why not get a pad for every bed in the house. It just might help your kids sleep better too, and I think most parents would agree it's a lot easier to sleep when the kids are sleeping soundly as well.

A Guide to Memory Foam Mattresses

The problem with many mattresses is that they just don’t fit your body. They are either rigid and resist the curves of your shape or they are overly soft and “give way” beneath you. The memory foam mattress was created in answer to this problem.

Memory foam is a material that is designed to be “viscoelastic.” This means that it will conform to your body, but it also has the ability to return to its original shape if forced. This material molds to the body, offering support and relieving pressure where needed.

If you are shopping for a memory-foam mattress at a discount and you don’t mind shopping online, check out Overstock. Overstock sells the overstock merchandise from other companies, often at deep discounts. At the time of this writing, Overstock sells a large variety of memory foam mattresses, memory foam pillows, and memory foam topper.

Wonderful Buys manufactures a line of Visco-Elastic memory foam bedding products, including pillows, mattresses, and mattress toppers.

Sealy offers the Reflexion Latex Foam Collection, which consists of mattresses ranging from $1299-$3499 for Queen-sized. This memory foam mattress is made of natural, body-contouring foam and is available in firm, pillow top, and plush. According to the website, latex is anti-microbial, dust-mite resistant, and mildew proof, so the mattress has health advantages.

Tempur-Pedic offers an extremely popular line of memory foam mattresses and bedding. Tempur-Pedic says that their product is light and breathable and will not cause sweating and clamminess.

The Isotonic Memory Foam mattress is another popular choice. It is available at many online stores, such as the Ultimate Back Store, Healthy Foundations, Comfort House, and Everyday Comfort.

Memory foam mattresses can be bought at most major mattress stores. They can also be purchased at department stores, such as Target and WalMart. Memory foam mattresses are available in many price ranges, so make sure you comparison shop before you buy. Hopefully, you will soon be resting easy.

Foam Mattress Pad- A Budget Solution For The Mattress Blues

Maybe your present mattress is so uncomfortable that you find yourself lying awake in the wee hours, watching that infomercial about the amazing memory foam mattress. And maybe you fall asleep at last, dreaming of having enough money to be able to afford the amazing memory foam mattress.

But you awake once again with the same stiff back, trying to recall the last time you were able to leap out of bed and embrace the new day. Your memory is, so it seems, much less effective then the memory of the amazing memory foam mattress.

But you still have a shot at involving foam in your equation for a restful night. While the memory foam mattress may out of your financial reach, a memory foam mattress pad may be well within it.

Characteristics Of Foam Mattress Pads

Foam mattress pads are usually between two and three inches thick and designed to slide right over your mattress. Their pliability allows them to conform to the contours of your body, saving you from a night of searching for the position in which you can finally relax enough to fall asleep.

Even better, foam mattress pads are available in the same memory foam as that found in the amazing memory foam mattress. Memory foam has its origins in the NASA space program, and was invented as padding to spare astronauts the trauma of liftoff as much as possible.

Memory foam reacts with a person’s body heat and weight, which cause it to soften and mold itself to the sleeper’s shape. The first time you actually touched memory foam, you may find it rather rigid, and the colder its surroundings, the more rigid it will be. You really can’t judge the comfort factor of memory foam until you lie down on a memory foam mattress and give it a chance to do its stuff.

Foam mattress pads of natural latex are hypo-allergenic, and provide relief from dust mires. Foam mattresses pads of Talalay latex are available in varying degrees of firmness; all latex is biodegradable. The higher the density of a foam mattress pad, the longer it will take to return to its regular shape.

A quality foam mattress pad will set you back from between $150 and $300, which, while is not as much as a foam mattress, can be a substantial investment. So unless your existing mattress still has some years of use ahead of it, you would be better off replacing it entirely.

You can do some Internet research to get an idea of what foam mattress pads are available in which price ranges; but as with all things, you will get what you pay for.
