History of the Sealy Brand
In 1881, Daniel Haynes started using cotton to make mattresses for his family and friends in a small town in Texas called Sealy. Cotton was relatively new to mattress making, but it had widespread use in making clothing. The cotton mattresses were found to be so comfortable that in 1889, Haynes created and was granted a patent on a machine that compressed cotton for use in mattress making.
Daniel Haynes decided to sell his cotton compression patent, along with all other mattress patents and ideas, to fellow Texan Earl Edwards, in 1906. Edwards was an advertising executive working for the Sealy Company. Edwards improved upon the original product design and made the mattress known to the world.
It wasn’t until 1950 that the Sealy Posturepedic mattress became available to the general public.
